The Bergen 5000 Challenge is a 5 km track race held at Fana stadion in Bergen. It consists of 12.5 laps with no elevation changes. Marketed as Bergen’s fast autumn 5000 m event, it features evening racing and distinct recreational and elite categories. The format is straightforward: a flat stadium track, precisely measured laps, and pacers to assist runners in achieving a target time. The race welcomes beginners, club runners, experienced athletes, friends, families, colleagues, and teams seeking a direct 5000 m challenge. Spectators are admitted without charge, fitting the stadium's design where supporters can view each lap rather than being fixed at a single point on a road course. The inaugural event saw 116 registered participants, including both amateur and elite 5000 m races, alongside a 1000 m children's race. Gneist supplied pacers in all heats to help runners achieve fast times.

Running: Locals run Bergen by mixing flat laps with honest hills. Nygårdsparken works for 5 km when you want controlled Z2 or intervals. The 6 km from Amalie Skramsvei in Sandviken to Bellevue is solid, and Fjellveien is a good start. Skansemyren track handles sharper work on the way up to Fløyen. Bergen Morning Miles, Bergen Parkrun, Bergen Running Club, BFG Bergen Løpeklubb, Mikkeller Running Club Bergen, No Bad Days Running Club Bergen, and BSI Friluft keep the week social. Fjordkraft Bergen City Marathon, Stolzekleiven Opp, Ulriken Opp, and Bergen Fjellkarusell anchor the calendar.
Cycling: Locals ride Bergen with a base-mile mindset because Bergen is far from flat. Most roads will be paved, and the city does not have a lot of segregated bicycle lanes or paths. Bontelabo to Old Bergen Museum takes about 15 minutes by bike, and the city centre to Troldhaugen takes about 45 minutes. Totland and Bontveit sit about 15-20 km outside the city centre, and that area is probably the best gravel riding. Fløyen to Ervik gives you plateau work around 300-400 m, and the 7 fjell route adds hike-bike flavor. The brief gives no named cycling club or cycling race, so the climbs become the anchor event.
Season: Summer gives Bergen its best training window, especially when the temperature reaches the upper 20s Celsius. Nygårdsparken hosts Sommernattsløpet Bergen, and the flat course gives you a clean shot at a PB. Locals still plan around rain because Bergen gets plenty of it year-round, but summer rides and runs feel open when the mountains clear. Winter brings cool days and intermittent snowfall, and the snow often melts quickly. Runners keep using the flat loops, Skansemyren, and Fjellveien when footing allows. Cyclists stay more selective, lean on paved routes, and save bigger gravel or 7 fjell days for better windows.
