Porto da Cruz Natura is a trail running event held in Porto da Cruz, Madeira, Portugal, offering three race distances: 12 km, 25 km, and 50 km. The event typically takes place in mid-July, providing participants with a choice between a shorter mountain course and a demanding ultra-distance run on the island. The routes traverse Madeira’s coastal, forest, and mountain landscapes. Course difficulty increases significantly with distance. The 12 km route features 350 m of elevation gain, the 25 km route has 1,400 m, and the 50 km route involves 3,370 m of climbing. This race is included in the UTMB® Index, offering trail runners a chance to earn qualifying points and also appealing to those seeking a challenging race on Madeira.
Ultra Skyrunning Madeira is a summer skyrunning race series held near Santana on Madeira, Portugal. The main event is a mountain ultra covering approximately 52 to 56 km with over 4,000 m of elevation gain. The series also features shorter sky races, a vertical kilometer, a steep sprint, and children's races. Most races begin and end near the Câmara Municipal de Santana. The Furão race starts at Quinta do Furão, and the sprint begins at Calhau da Rocha do Navio. The routes traverse Madeira's steep mountain terrain, meaning even the shorter races involve significant climbing. The vertical kilometer covers about 1,000 m of gain in 4.8 km, and the 1.3 km sprint ascends roughly 370 m. The series is associated with the Skyrunner World Series and the Portuguese Cup, offering categories for youth, juniors, seniors, veterans, and children, along with team standings and prize money for top competitors.
Running: The first route covers 07 km with 110 m of gain. The second route covers 36 km and gains only 37 m. The third route covers 29 km with 1,273 m of gain and feels properly earned. Funchal Run meets every Tuesday and Thursday. Marathon de Funchal, Funchal Marathon, Mini Marathon, Ecotrail Funchal-Madeira Island, Porto da Cruz Natura, and Ultra Skyrunning Madeira sit on the local race calendar.
Cycling: Locals ride from Funchal to Câmara de Lobos and Ribeira Brava when they want coastal base miles, and that southern route runs about 25-30 km one way. Pico do Arieiro is the climb everyone talks about, because the road rises from Funchal for 20-25 km to 1818 m and often kicks past 10%. C.S. Marítimo, C.D. Nacional, and C.F. União are the club names you hear around town. Cycling Madeira runs road cycling, mountain biking XC, and MTB Enduro. Paul da Serra Tour and Levada da Serra Tour give gravel, light MTB, flowy trail, and cyclocross-style grit.
Season: May, June, September, and October give Funchal the best training window. Summer brings daily highs around 25-28°C, and the southern coast can push past 30°C, so locals start early or ride from the coast up into cooler air. Winter still works at sea level, because Funchal sits near 18-20°C on many days. Pico do Arieiro and the highest peaks change the mood fast, and winter can put them into the 30s-40s°F or single digits°C. Runners keep the levadas and city loops handy. Riders respect descents, layers, and long climbs.
