Green Mile Day Marathon
SAT OCT 31
The Green Mile Day Marathon is run inside the former HMP Dorchester in Dorchester, Dorset, England, with the start listed at postcode DT1 1JD. The main race is a full marathon of 42.195 km, and the event also offers an 83 km road race and a night option. The prison setting is the point: the marathon stays completely inside the prison, which the organisers describe as the only marathon in the world run entirely within one. Runners can tackle gruelling stairs in daylight, in the dark, or both, and the programme includes a spooky Halloween evening edition for anyone who wants the prison atmosphere turned up another notch.
Cornish Marathon
SUN NOV 1
The Cornish Marathon is Cornwall's only all-road marathon, a November race based at Millennium House in Pensilva and run entirely on tarmac. It began in 1984 as a wager between organizers John Foster and Stephen Henderson over who could run faster, with the first field having only 27 runners. The race now closes the Cornish Grand Prix Series and typically draws a mixed local field, unlike a flat, big-city marathon. The course starts with two laps around Pensilva, then proceeds through Draynes Valley and onto Bodmin Moor, passing Dozmary Pool and Jamaica Inn at Bolventor before returning along the Fowey Valley. The road offers little respite: the total climb is approximately 600 metres, with about a quarter of that occurring in the final five miles. The late climb to Foredown, between miles 24 and 25, is the section runners recall after finishing.
Dart Deliverance 50K, Marathon & Half Marathon
SAT NOV 7
Portland Coastal Marathon
SUN FEB 14
The Portland Coastal Marathon is a February trail race held on the South West Coast Path near Portland, offering marathon, half marathon, and 10k distances. It is a self-navigation event; runners must download the GPX file beforehand and follow it using their own device. The terrain is exposed, the route is neither flat nor fast, and the race is suited for those seeking a challenging early-season test rather than a rapid road time. The marathon course circles the island twice, with the sea on the left during the first loop and on the right for the second. The half marathon and 10k follow single-loop sections of the same coastal path. No route markers are provided, checkpoints verify completion of the full course, and taking shortcuts results in disqualification. All finishers receive a unique Portland Coastal medal, and the top three male and female athletes in each distance category are awarded trophies.
The Dartmoor Marathon
SUN APR 11
The Dartmoor Marathon begins and ends in Tavistock, a market town bordering Dartmoor National Park in Devon. This is a road marathon, set on moorland roads with steep ascents, undulating stretches, expansive vistas, and sections alongside reservoirs within one of England’s most rugged national parks. The course crosses Dartmoor National Park, passing landmarks like Dartmoor Prison, Burrator Reservoir, Princetown, tors, historical hamlets, and isolated open moorland. It attracts participants seeking a challenging rural marathon over a course conducive to personal bests. The event includes a local element with Flapjackery flapjacks provided for runners.
Steaming To The Coast
SAT APR 17
Steaming to the Coast begins with participants boarding a steam train in Minehead, then running back toward the coast. This trail running event in West Somerset offers three distance options: 11 km, 11 miles, or a full marathon. The railway segment utilizes the UK’s longest standard gauge steam railway line, transporting participants inland to Bishops Lydeard, situated at the base of the Quantock Hills AONB. Marathon runners disembark there for the complete 26.2-mile journey back to Minehead. The 11-mile and 11 km runners continue on the train for a shorter duration before starting from their respective points along the line. The race concludes outside Minehead Station, bringing the day to a close where the train journey commenced. The course from Bishops Lydeard passes under an underpass, proceeds along Station Road and Mount Street, then heads toward Quantock View before returning through the West Somerset countryside. Runners of shorter distances offer encouragement to the marathoners departing Bishops Lydeard before continuing their train journey to Williton or Washford. Channel Events is the organiser, and the course is marked with reusable orange flags and orange arrows on white signs, secured with reusable zip ties and gathered after the final participant.

About Marathon races in Exeter

Exeter Training Notes

Exeter hosts 8 Marathon races in 2026 within 80 km of the city centre — upcoming dates, recurring series, and other races nearby, all in one place.

Locals use the River Exe, Exeter Quayside, Riverside Valley Park, and Exeter Ship Canal when they want flat base miles or quick intervals. Exeter Riverside parkrun starts on Bromhams Field and keeps the effort honest on shared tarmac, gravel, and fields. Killerton parkrun gives you a one-lap multi-terrain loop across open parkland, woodland, and working farmland near Broadclyst. Front Foot Exeter Run Club meets Thursdays from 6:30pm to 7:30pm at Haven Banks Car Park. Exeter Harriers trains Tuesdays and Thursdays at Exeter Arena. South West Road Runners and Greenbow Running Club keep the week social. Exeter 10K River Run, Run Exe 5k, Exeter Autumn Half Marathon, Green Lantern, and Exeter Half Marathon are the anchor races.

Locals ride the Exe Estuary Trail when they want clean Z2 and a route that runs between Exeter and Exmouth or out toward Dawlish Warren. The trail runs 7 miles one way, and trains make the return simple. The Granite Way follows the former Southern Region railway line, and Okehampton to Lydford gives you an 18-mile round trip after the train from Exeter. Exeter Wheelers Cycling Club carries the serious club scene, with road racing, 10-mile time trials, crits, an open hill climb in September, and South West Cyclo-cross links. The climbs sit in the hilly Wednesday nights and the shorter, hillier Saturday Social rides.

July gives Exeter its best shot at summer training, with warm, changeable days and enough light for evening intervals, chain gang work, or longer Quayside runs. Summer also suits the flat Exe work, the Exmouth or Dawlish Warren rides, and steady marathon laps through Exwick and St Thomas. November brings the wettest month, and winter turns the city toward mild, wet miles with short colder spells. Runners keep using lit routes, Riverside Valley Park, and club sessions. Exeter Wheelers shifts Thursday race training toward swift tempo in winter, while Sunday Club Runs still roll every week in 14-16 mph, 16-18 mph, and 18-20 mph groups.
