Last Chance Marathon and Half Marathon

The Last Chance Marathon and Half Marathon is a New Year's Eve trail race in Bellingham, Washington, starting from the Fairhaven Park Pavilion. Participants can select either 13.1 miles or 26.2 miles, with the marathon course consisting of the half-marathon route completed twice. The race setup is straightforward: registration closes the day prior, the entry fee is modest, shirts are not included by default, bathrooms will be open at Fairhaven Park, and the heated pavilion offers a warm space before or after a winter run. The course follows the Interurban Trail toward Clayton Beach, primarily on a former railroad bed with a gravel surface beneath a tree canopy. It is largely flat, featuring minimal inclines, although the Arroyos Park segment introduces double-track trails, bridges, and brief ascents. Snow is possible during this season, and race organizers reserve the right to alter the course if trail conditions necessitate it. Participants are advised to carry their own hydration and supplies, with the initial aid station located approximately 3.5 miles into the race, contributing to a low-key, self-reliant trail running atmosphere rather than a large-scale urban event.

Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships

The Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships, or SSCWC, is an annual cyclocross race with one rule: riders use bikes that have a single gear. Recent listings place the event in early October, with Minneapolis hosting this year. Updates are available on the race website, Facebook, and Instagram. The available listings do not detail the course, but the race follows typical cyclocross format: short, repeated off-road laps featuring tight turns, dismounts, and hard accelerations. The most unique aspect is the culture surrounding it, as SSCWC maintains a quirky, themed tradition instead of functioning as a standard championship weekend.

Lake Whatcom Triathlon

The Lake Whatcom Triathlon has athletes swim in Lake Whatcom, bike on country roads, and run on a forested trail with waterfalls. This multi-sport event in Bellingham occurs in July and offers Olympic, Sprint, Aquabike, and Youth Splash and Dash distances. Racers can compete individually or as a relay team. The course presents challenges beyond a simple flat-and-fast route; one participant noted choppy swim water, while another found the bike course hillier than anticipated. The event attracts adult triathletes, relay teams, aquabike competitors, and children. Volunteers and course markings consistently receive positive feedback from previous participants. The race organizers also highlight Bellingham as a focal point, aiming to support local businesses and organizations while showcasing the area's natural features and recreational community to visiting athletes.

About cycling & running in Bellingham

Bellingham Training Notes

Running: Locals run the waterfront when they want flat rhythm and bay views. Fairhaven gives easy access to the Interurban Trail, and that line runs from Fairhaven out toward Chuckanut. South Bay Trail travels along Bellingham Bay and crosses Taylor Dock over the bay. Long-run days link Zuanich Park, Boulevard Park, Fairhaven Park, Sehome Hill, Connelly Creek Nature Area, Whatcom Falls Park, Railroad Trail, Whatcom Creek Trail, and Sunnyland. Greater Bellingham Running Club anchors the scene with races like Gale Pfueller Track Classic and Fairhaven Frosty 5K & 10K. Bellingham Bay Marathon gives marathoners the local anchor at 42.82 km.

Cycling: Locals ride everything here, from road Z2 to gravel gran fondo pace to Galbraith singletrack. Galbraith Mountain sets the mountain-bike tone, and WMBC keeps the trail community visible. The route runs 6 km and climbs 1,118 m, so it works when you want a real gravel day. Another route runs 6 km and climbs 349 m with punchy climbs and some MTB singletrack. That stretch runs 6 km, and locals talk about it with respect. Chuckanut, Blanchard, Stewart Mountain, Yew Street Hill, Alabama Hill, and Mount Baker hold the climbs. Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships, Lake Whatcom Triathlon, and Padden Triathlon give the calendar some bite.

Season: Spring, summer, and fall give Bellingham the cleanest training rhythm for running, riding, intervals, and base miles. Summer stays mild most years, and dry spells can make Galbraith, Chuckanut, and the Interurban feel fast. Locals use the waterfront, Lake Padden, Whatcom Falls Park, and Fairhaven when they want steady miles without overthinking it. Winter brings rain and colder temps, but riders still go year-round and layer a bit more. Tree-covered trails usually stay nice through winter, while higher Galbraith and Chuckanut elevations can get snow for a few days or a week. Bigger jump lines often take a soft close, so winter shifts more toward Z2, trail runs, gravel, and digging days.
