USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships

The USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships determine the American road cycling titles, with stars-and-stripes jerseys at stake. USA Cycling organizes the series, typically held in late spring or early summer, with recent events taking place in Charleston, West Virginia. The competition features standard road cycling disciplines: a solo time trial, a fast criterium on a short urban circuit, and longer road races for elite, under-23, junior, and para categories. In Charleston, the start and finish are located near Haddad Riverfront Park along the Kanawha River. The courses utilize downtown streets, sharp criterium turns, and climbs characteristic of the Appalachian region. The participants include American WorldTour cyclists, domestic professionals, development riders, and specialists who may have a single opportunity each season to win a national title. Victors earn the U.S. champion jersey in their discipline for the following year, with exceptions for the Olympics, World Championships, or when a stage-race leader's jersey takes precedence. The professional road race originated in the mid-1980s. Following an earlier period where international riders could compete and the top American received the title, the current championship is exclusively for U.S. riders.

Oregon Trail Gravel

Oregon Trail Gravel begins in Bend, Oregon, offering a five-day gravel stage format centered on riding, camping, and communal camp life. The Pioneer race covers approximately 350 miles with about 30,000 feet of elevation gain. The Settler option is shorter, around 250 miles with roughly 15,000 feet of climbing. Pioneer is the competitive category, featuring podiums for Pro, Open, Masters, and Masters+ divisions. Settler, Iron Horse e-bike, and Tag Team entries are non-competitive adventure rides, accommodating both racers seeking results and participants desiring the full route without the pressure of competition. The course runs point-to-point through the Cascade Mountains, featuring varied gravel surfaces that shift throughout the week, providing different riding conditions and rhythms. The event includes four nights of camping, gear transport, well-stocked aid stations, and meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). Mechanical support is available both on the course and at the camp. Camp life is integral to the event's character, offering specialty morning coffee, evening activities, a fat tire gathering, and a whiskey bar post-ride. Tag teams can select Pioneer or Settler distances, with teammates alternating daily. Iron Horse riders may utilize battery exchange at aid stations but must bypass the optional Friday Downhill segment due to permit restrictions.

Running: Locals run the Deschutes River Trail when they want dirt, water, and easy miles from town. The Deschutes River Trail near Old Mill gives a three-mile-or-so loop from Farewell Bend Park. Shevlin Park covers the soft stuff, and the Shevlin Loop Trail runs 6 miles with around 290 feet of gain. Pilot Butte brings the punch, with its singletrack gaining about 500 feet in less than a mile. Central Oregon Running Klub handles Thursday miles, Saturday coffee runs, and Sunday long runs. Season: Autumn usually gives Bend the best training window, with warm dry days, cooler nights, and that annual Indian summer feel. Summer turns the high desert dial way up, and the daily temperature swing approaches 35°F, so locals start early and keep the easy days truly Z2. The Deschutes River and Shevlin Park feel especially good when the exposed land gets hot and dry. Winter brings snow, colder December days, and a different rhythm for both sports. Central Oregon Running Klub shifts Thursday runs to Crosscut Warming Hut and keeps Hot Chocolate Runs going downtown. Riders lean into dry-day gravel, fat bikes, and whatever the organizer has lined up.
