Hokie Half Marathon and 5K

The Hokie Half Marathon and 5K is a fall race weekend in Blacksburg, Virginia, centered on Virginia Tech’s Hokie identity. The half marathon starts at 7:30 a.m., the 5K starts at 8:00 a.m., and this is the 14th annual running. It is designed to stay compact, with the half capped at 2,000 participants and the 5K capped at 500 runners and walkers. Start-time weather is typically cool, with average temperatures around 55 degrees at the start and about 61 degrees by 10 a.m. The half marathon begins with three miles on roads, then covers about six miles on the Huckleberry Bike Trail before returning to a mix of roads and bike trails for the final miles. Aid stations offer water and Gatorade every two miles, Gu at mile seven, and porta potties at several points on the route. Live music is present throughout the course, and finishers receive a Hokie Bird medal. The weekend also includes a free Hokie Kids Run the evening before the main races, allowing families to participate without everyone needing to race the half or 5K.

Downtown Sundown 5K

The Downtown Sundown 5K begins at 8 p.m. in downtown Blacksburg, Virginia, shortly before the late sunset. It is included in the Summer Solstice Festival and is the fifth event in the RunAbout Race Series, giving it a local festival atmosphere instead of a typical morning road race. Participants are encouraged to wear glowsticks, lights, or reflective gear, suiting the timing as the race starts in daylight and progresses into dusk. The course begins and ends near Draper Road and Washington Street by the Blacksburg Municipal Building, then winds through town on streets and paved paths. A water station is located just after mile 2. Awards are presented to the top overall male and female finishers, masters and grand masters winners, and age-group recipients, with each runner eligible for a single award. Strollers will begin at the rear, headphones are not recommended, and these regulations help maintain a clear course for runners.

LewisGale Salem Half Marathon, 8K and Kids Fun Run

The LewisGale Salem Half Marathon, Virginia's Blue Ridge 8K, and Kids Fun Run all start and finish at the Salem Farmers Market in downtown Salem, Virginia. The main races offer adults and teens a half marathon or 8K option, while children ages 4 to 12 can run either one mile or two miles. The half marathon and 8K routes begin on Main Street, pass through Salem neighborhoods, Roanoke College, and the downtown business district, and include both flat stretches and hills. Salem already had a strong sports identity from hosting NCAA championships and other major tournaments, and this race series grew out of that same local push. Spectators can gather near the Farmers Market finish, and half marathon runners can also use the race toward the Virginia's Blue Ridge Triple Crown medal.

About cycling & running in Blacksburg

Blacksburg NRV Training Ground

Running: Locals run the Huckleberry Trail when they want an easy connector between Blacksburg and Christiansburg, and the path gives about 7 miles for steady Z2. Christiansburg Run Club keeps the week moving from 407 Roanoke Street, the Montgomery County Court House, RunAbout Sports, and Radford University Track. Blacksburg Striders put Saturday trail miles at Pandapas Pond. The trail gives you 10 km with 42 m of gain. Hokie Half Marathon and 5K, Downtown Sundown 5K, and the Draper Mile are the anchor race names locals know.

Cycling: New River Valley Bicycle Association riders have the good stuff: secondary roads, public forestland, gravel, singletrack, and enough climbing to make base miles honest. Locals roll the Huckleberry Trail for an easy spin, take SAYG into Merrimac for recovery, and use Harding-Cedar, Dry Run, Norris Run, and Tabor-Sandy-Blacksburg when the legs need work. Harding-Cedar runs 7 miles and gains 2000+ ft, while the Butt Mountain / Salt Pond Mountain Gravel Loop stays between 3,000 ft and 4,200 ft. The route starts 4 km from Blacksburg and gains 2,497 m.

Season: The local notes do not pin down best months, so locals read the season by events, daylight, and route choice. Summer puts the 44th Annual Draper Mile entirely on Draper Road with Steppin' Out Festival, and runners keep using morning runs, pub runs, track, and Pandapas trail time. Cyclists use warm days for gran fondo-length road miles, gravel loops, and mountain routes toward Mountain Lake, Clover Hollow, Poor Mountain, and the Walker Mountains. Winter changes the game, and Sugar Run + Guinea Mtn becomes the move west of the New River for sunshine away from the arctic Blacksburg wind.
