About cycling & running in Bozeman

Bozeman Training Notes

Running: Locals run Bozeman from town dirt to mountain singletrack without making a big deal of it. The Gallagator Trail connects downtown Bozeman and Montana State University, so it works for easy Z2, shakeouts, and lunch miles. Bozeman Creek Trail runs 20 miles toward Mystic Lake when legs want something longer. Highland Glen Nature Preserve has a 10km trail system, and Story Mill Community Park has four miles of softer trails. Bozeman Run Club meets every Saturday morning at rotating locations, with runs from 2-3 miles to 20+ miles. Anchor races include Bozeman Half Marathon & 10K, The Sweet Pea Run, Bangtail Divide 38k, and 5K Brew Run at Bozeman Brewing.

Cycling: Locals ride road, gravel, and singletrack because Bozeman gives you all three fast. Hyalite Canyon is a 30-mile road route, and Sourdough with Kelly Canyon gives riders a 22-mile option for steady base miles. Gallatin Valley Bicycle Club serves the greater Bozeman cycling community and runs monthly non-competitive day tours. Belgian Waffle Ride Montana 2026 and The Morganzo sit on the anchor-event list. The Morganzo covers 4 miles and gains 2,254 feet, with smooth gravel, rougher dirt roads, and some pavement. The only real climb meanders for about 3 miles and gains around 800 feet. Climbs stack up toward Hyalite Canyon, Jackson Creek Pass, Leverich Canyon, and the Bridger Mountains.

Season: Summer is the best stretch, and Bozeman at 1,463 meters makes warm days feel big without making nights stay warm. Locals use summer for long Z2, gravel loops, trail runs, and the kind of overly ambitious rides that start right out the front door. The city gets real day-to-night swings, so morning intervals can feel different from evening spins. Winter brings cold, snowy months, and melt-out makes conditions messy when everyone wants to get back on trails. Runners move toward town paths, indoor tracks, and packed routes, while cyclists shift to whatever road, gravel, or trail conditions allow.
