Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs

The Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs are a series of high-altitude trail races on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, offering 100 Mile, 100K, 50K, and 23K distances. The longer distances are firmly in ultrarunning territory; the 100 Mile route involves over 18,000 feet of elevation change, and runners maintain an average elevation around 8,300 feet. The event typically occurs in July. Historically, the 100 Mile has been a Western States 100 qualifier, and fast 100K finishers can also earn a qualifying mark. The course crosses Spooner Nevada State Park and adjacent U.S. Forest Service land, including backcountry terrain near the Diamond Peak area. The race's slogan, “a glimpse of heaven, a taste of hell,” reflects the combination of Lake Tahoe vistas, thin air, extended climbs, and challenging footing. Participants receive buckles upon finishing. The 100 Mile, 100K, and 50K races award Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc index points. Race reports highlight well-supported aid stations, dedicated volunteers, and a field comprising serious ultrarunners alongside those aiming for a demanding mountain finish.

Carson Valley Trails Run the Valley 5k, 10k and Family 2k

The Carson Valley Trails Run the Valley 5k, 10k and Family 2k begins at James Lee Park in Carson City, Nevada. All three distances utilize dirt or trail surfaces within the Carson Valley Trails Association network. This October event in Northern Nevada offers a 10k run/walk, a 5k-ish run/walk, and a free Family 2k designed for children, families, walkers, and those seeking a shorter trail experience. The 10k covers a six-mile loop starting with a quarter-mile single-track climb, then proceeding on trails from the Jacks Valley and James Lee Loops. The 5k-ish route measures 3.55 miles and begins with the same brief single-track climb before continuing on the James Lee Loops. The Family 2k follows the crushed-granite Indian Hills fitness-course path, then returns via single track. Off-road strollers and leashed dogs are permitted. Children under 12 receive a finisher medal. The event benefits local trails. Registration for the 5k includes a one-year Individual Membership to the Carson Valley Trails Association for non-members.

About cycling & running in Carson City

Carson City Base Miles

Running: Locals run Carson City from the front door when the day allows. The city gives runners almost 30 miles of paved trails, and many consider the trail heads to be right out their front door. Run With Us keeps the week honest with Speedy Tuesdays or Hilly Tuesdays from 6:00am to 7:30am every Tuesday. Carson Riverview Park is the spot for speed work. Ash Canyon is where locals go for hills. Prison Hill brings the dirt, and the Nevada Day Classic, Escape from Prison Hill, Pi Day Fun Run, and Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs give the calendar real anchor events.

Cycling: Carson City rides like a capital with a dirt habit. The League of American Cyclist certified the city as a bronze Bike-Friendly Community, and the bicycle network covers 15 miles. The Kit Carson Trail, V&T Trail, Linear Park Trail, Mexican Ditch Trail, and Prison Hill & Silver Saddle Ranch Trail System keep short spins simple. The trails include 2 km of unpaved surface. The Carson Range holds the west-side climbing, while the Virginia Range, Pine Nut Mountains, and Prison Hill keep gravel, singletrack, and cyclocross legs busy.

Season: Spring and fall are the money months for base miles, intervals, and long Z2 days. Summer brings hot afternoons, and July highs average around 32°C, so locals ride early and keep harder run work tight. Carson City sits around 1,400 meters above sea level, and that little bit of altitude shows up when the pace gets spicy. Winter brings cold mornings and about 19 inches of snowfall, so runners use paved trails when they are clear, riders pick windows, and Fresh Tracks 5K Snowshoe race starts looking useful.
