Cooper River Bridge Run

The Cooper River Bridge Run is a one-way 10K from Mount Pleasant into Charleston, South Carolina, using the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge as the centerpiece. It is typically held on the first Saturday in April and attracts one of the largest 10K fields in the United States. It is also South Carolina’s only USA Track and Field-sanctioned elite competition, meaning the event that includes local runners and charity teams also draws serious international speed. The race originated from a local effort to encourage activity in the Charleston area, and its first edition was less refined than today's event: the course was shortened after the start, water stops were absent, many runners withdrew, and some required medical attention because of the heat. The route initially began at Patriots Point and concluded at White Point Gardens, with later versions moving the finish closer to the College of Charleston. A cannon fires to start the race, referencing Charleston’s military history, and Kenyan runners have been a dominant presence at the front for decades. Modern arrangements include packet pickup, mailing options, and bus and boat transport for participants.

Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series Race 2

The Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series is a sprint-distance triathlon series held at 871 Riverland Drive in Charleston, South Carolina. Each event is part of the same local series, allowing athletes to compete in the format multiple times without entering a long-course triathlon. The specific swim, bike, and run routes are not detailed in the published information. However, the event is structured as a short triathlon, not a standalone run. Organizers direct participants to the Charleston County Parks race website for further details, offer a direct contact form for inquiries, and gather feedback through participant surveys post-race.

Veterans Day 5K Fun Run/Walk at Hampton Park

The Veterans Day 5K Fun Run/Walk covers 3.1 miles in Hampton Park, Charleston, South Carolina, beginning at 9 AM. Its purpose is to honor veterans. A virtual option is available alongside the in-person race, and veterans or active-duty personnel receive a reduced entry fee. Race-day activities will take place on the north side of the park, near the Rose Pavilion and public restrooms, consolidating information, pre-run activities, the start, and the finish. The course consists of 3.1 laps around the Hampton Park loop on Mary Murray Drive. The road is divided into three lanes: the inside lane for competitive runners, the middle lane for cyclists, and the outside lane for runners and walkers. Vehicle traffic will be excluded. The event also gathers food donations during packet pickup and on race day. Suggested items include canned meats, peanut butter and jelly, canned fruit, canned vegetables, and ready-to-eat meals.

About cycling & running in Charleston

Charleston Lowcountry Training

Running: Locals run Charleston from Hampton Park to the Battery, then cross the Ravenel Bridge when intervals need teeth. Waterfront Park to Battery gives three miles of quintessential Charleston views, and the Historic District turns easy Z2 into a little tour of colonial side streets. Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island handle beach miles, while Shem Creek to Pitt Street gives five miles through Old Village. Charleston Running Club, Let's Run CHS, Ethos athletic club, Fleet Feet Mount Pleasant, Black Girls RUN! Charleston, and Park Circle Pacers keep the week moving. Cooper River Bridge Run is the anchor, with Stoney 100, IOP 5K, and Floppin' Flounder 5K close behind.

Cycling: Locals ride flat, salty base miles on West Ashley Greenway, West Ashley Bikeway, James Island Connector, and the Ravenel Bridge Path. Coastal Cyclists sets the tone, and Trek Bikes of Mt. Pleasant keeps Barn Jam and the 10 AM Social Ride in the rotation. Awendaw A Ride covers 41 miles at a 23 MPH average, while Awendaw B Ride usually runs 32 miles at 19-21 MPH. The route runs 7 km and gains 143 m, so gran fondo legs get work. Ravenel Bridge owns the climbs here, and Swamp Fox Passage, Awendaw Passage, Brick Church Rd to Hoover Rd, and Wando Road to Brick Church Road cover gravel and dirt.

Season: Spring from March through May and fall from September through November give runners and cyclists the best conditions. Summer brings hot and muggy conditions, so locals start early, hydrate, and keep hard work short unless the plan says otherwise. Water temperatures typically range from 72-78°F, and beach runs can end with legs in the ocean by choice. Winter stays mild compared with northern climates, so clubs keep showing up and rides go rain or shine. The city sits at 2 m elevation, and Ravenel Bridge still makes the only steady climb feel honest.
