Novant Health Charlotte Marathon

The Novant Health Charlotte Marathon is a November road marathon in Charlotte, North Carolina, with a loop course that starts and finishes in Uptown Charlotte. The full marathon is the headline race, but the series also includes two other races, and the half marathon usually draws the biggest field. The half uses the first half of the marathon route, so runners who choose the shorter race still get a large piece of the main course. The marathon course is certified and can be used to qualify for Boston, which gives the race a practical pull for runners chasing a standard as well as locals running their city marathon. The race grew out of the gap left when the Charlotte Observer Marathon ended, and it later ran under the name Thunder Road Marathon. That older name came with a NASCAR theme, a clear nod to Charlotte’s strong auto-racing culture. The modern event keeps the city-center loop, with Uptown serving as both the launch point and the finish area. Marathon entries have never reached the stated cap of 3,500, so this is not a giant-field marathon, but it still brings together full marathoners, a larger half-marathon crowd, and runners using the race as a serious qualifying attempt. The course records sit at 2:23:50 for men, held by Adam Jones, and 2:45:04 for women, held by Megan Hepp.

Around the Crown 10K

The Around the Crown 10K begins and concludes at Truist Field on South Mint Street in Charlotte, North Carolina, with the main race commencing at 7:30 a.m. EDT. Its unique feature is allowing runners to traverse I-277, the freeway encircling Uptown Charlotte, rather than just driving on it. The series also incorporates a Kids Run the day prior to the 10K and a virtual 10K option available during race week. The course highlights Charlotte, both geographically and in the event's presentation. Organizers link the race to local philanthropy, featuring fundraising for Sustain Charlotte and a Pay What You Can program sponsored by Truist, alongside support for various local nonprofits. Sustainability is integral to the event's ethos, aiming to be among the nation's most eco-conscious races.

About cycling & running in Charlotte

Charlotte Training Ground

Running: Locals build long runs on Little Sugar Creek Greenway, and the path runs 19 miles with plenty of places to jump on. Little Sugar Creek Greenway stretches from Freedom Park down to the SC state line, so it is a go-to for 20 mile runs. McMullen Greenway gives runners about 10 miles down and back from the Hwy-51 entrance or Rea Rd entrance. Charlotte Running Club pulls the running scene together with group runs and social events. Charlotte Running Company hosts weekly run clubs every day. Around the Crown 10K owns September, and the Novant Health Charlotte Marathon anchors November.

Cycling: Riders treat the U.S. National Whitewater Center like the main dirt playground. The U.S. National Whitewater Center has 40+ miles of singletrack and cross-country cycling trails through woodlands along the Catawba River and Long Creek. Lake Norman State Park adds 30+ miles of mountain biking trails when locals want more base miles off pavement. Tarheel Trailblazers keeps the mountain bike crowd connected around greater Charlotte trails. Climbs show up as punchy work, with the Medal Madness and Luau courses both using a hill at the start and finish. Fisher Farm Park, Renaissance Park, and Anne Springs Close Greenway round out the trail rotation.

Season: Late fall through early spring gives runners and riders the best window. Summer in Charlotte brings heat and humidity, so locals move intervals early, keep Z2 honest, and pick shaded greenways when the sun gets heavy. The U.S. National Whitewater Center still works for trail time, and Four Mile Creek Greenway gives up to 12 miles on a shaded out-and-back. Winter changes the rhythm more than the map, with greenways, parks, singletrack, and club runs staying useful while the cooler months make long runs, base miles, and steady rides feel easier.
