Mystery Mountain Marathon & 12-Miler

The Mystery Mountain Marathon & 12-Miler is a U.S. trail race series offering two loop-course options: a marathon and a 12-miler. The marathon course includes approximately 2,000 feet of climbing, and the 12-miler has about 700 feet of elevation gain. Both races emphasize hills over pure distance. The event structure is straightforward: participants select either the full marathon loop or the 12-mile loop and race under the Mystery Mountain banner. The available information indicates a mountain-style trail event focused on climbing and uneven terrain, with a shorter option for those who prefer the same course type without the full marathon commitment.

About cycling & running in Dalton

Dalton Base Miles And Mountain Grit

Running: Dalton runners get an easy split between town laps and mountain dirt. The town has a 4 mile paved walking track for shakeouts and beginner intervals. Lakeshore Park gives you a walking track and a rubber track when legs need flat ground. The paved walking track runs 6 miles long. A 5 mile spur trail connects to the main route. Pinhoti Trail has the rugged stuff west and north of town. Lance's Legacy 5k and Fun Run and Dalton Red Carpet Half Marathon anchor the local road calendar. Kiwanis Club of Walker keeps Miles for Smiles on the nearby race list.

Cycling: Dalton riders point first to Raisin Woods Mountain Bike Park when somebody asks for dirt. Raisin Woods Mountain Bike Park gives riders five miles of wilderness trail and seven separate mountain biking loops, so it works for skills, Z2, and hard laps. Potato Hill Park brings the singletrack switchbacks, and those nasty gravelled switchbacks can toss strong riders. Mt. Mt. Oglethorpe has a 6 mile hiking and biking trail near town. 82%. Pinhoti Trail brings the real climbs north and west toward the Blue Ridge foothills.

Season: Dalton training feels best when the air backs off and the mountains stay usable. September matters because The Georgia Jewel puts the Pinhoti Trail on the endurance calendar. Summer gives locals hot, humid base miles, early starts, shaded singletrack, and plenty of sweat at races like Meat Sweats Sizzler Run. Red Clay Resort and Haig Mill Lake make recovery days feel close to home. Winter stays mild to cool, so runners keep track work alive and cyclists keep riding Raisin Woods when the woods are firm. The city sits across USDA Hardiness Zones 7B and 8A, and winter only rarely shuts down a normal week.
