Running: Detroit runners keep the Riverwalk, Dequindre Cut, Joe Louis Greenway, and Belle Isle Park loop in regular rotation. The Riverwalk loop is 4 miles with skyline and Windsor shore views. WeRun313 sets the tone with Two Mile Tuesdays, 5K/10K Thursday, and Sunday Long Run. RUNdetroit starts Saturday runs at 8am year-round from 1948 Division St with 3, 6, and 10 mile options. Detroit Free Press Marathon, Detroit Riverfront Run 2026, CHASS 5k Run/Walk & Kid's Superhero Race, and The Sugar Rush 5K give the calendar real pull.
Cycling: Detroit riders use the Detroit RiverWalk, Belle Isle Park, Dequindre Cut Greenway, Rouge Park, and Grosse Pointe for everyday base miles. The RiverWalk runs 6 miles from Mack Ave to Atwater St. The Morning Cranks, Clinton River Riders, Downriver Cycling club, Wolverine, Cadieux Bicycling Club, Base Media, and Flying Rhino cover everything from social spins to crit legs. Tour De Troit is the anchor event. Waterloo State Recreation area has the climbs north and west with rolling hills and curvy descents, and the Farmington Hills to Whitmore Lake dirt-road ride is 101 km with 511 m elevation.
Season: Detroit feels best from May to September, when runners stack Z2 on the Riverwalk and riders stretch evening miles toward Belle Isle, Hines Park Trail, and Stony Creek Metropark. Temperatures drop below 2°C on 12 days, so locals start early, keep intervals honest, and watch May and June for heavier precipitation. Winter changes the rhythm for both sports. Measurable snow typically falls between November 15 and April 4, and temperatures stay at or below freezing on many days, so runners lean into cleared paths while cyclists shift toward bundled road rides, indoor work, and mountain bike loops when conditions line up.
