Summit North Trail Runs is an August trail-running weekend in Duluth, Minnesota, utilizing the trails of West Duluth. The series provides four distances: the Mountain Lap 5K, the approximately 8-mile Creeks race, the Forest Track Heavy Half Marathon, and a Friday-night Hill Climb-Descent. The courses guide runners onto rugged climbs and winding forest singletrack instead of smooth road miles. The Forest Track features a section named Ely's Tunnel. The combination of a short 5K, an 8-mile race, a heavy half marathon, and a separate climb-descent event accommodates both newer trail runners and those seeking a challenging Midwest trail effort.
Grandma's Marathon Race Weekend concludes in Duluth's Canal Park adjacent to the Aerial Lift Bridge, close to the restaurant that inspired the race's name. The primary event is a 26.2-mile paved road marathon held each June from Two Harbors to Duluth, Minnesota. A half marathon and 5 km race are also part of the same weekend, drawing additional participants. The marathon has been contested annually since 1977, typically attracting around 9,000 marathoners, and is one of the ten largest U.S. marathons based on finishers. The route begins in Two Harbors, proceeds along Route 61 beside Lake Superior, and finishes in the bustling Canal Park area of Duluth's waterfront. Scott Keenan, a member of the North Shore Striders, conceived the event after other local businesses declined sponsorship; the recently opened Grandma's Restaurant provided $600 for the inaugural race. The first race featured 160 participants, including ten women, with a red truck leading the field and Garry Bjorklund and Wendy Hovland as the winners. Initial aid stations offered water and ERG, a sports drink formulated for electrolyte replacement with glucose, while current stations provide water and Powerade. The weekend now unites club runners, novice marathoners, tourists, and residents in Duluth, drawing tens of thousands of attendees for the races.
Running: Locals run the Superior Hiking Trail because it spans the city and gives you technical singletrack without a long drive. Hartley Park, Lester Park, Chester Park, and Bagley Nature Center handle everyday miles, while Chester Park Trail follows Chester Creek when you want quick vert. The Boardwalk 5 mile keeps Z2 honest by Lake Superior, and Western Waterfront Trail gives a calmer option. Run Duluth works more like a loosely knit but closely tied running community than an official team. Grandma's Marathon Race Weekend, Duluth Trails Festival, Summit North Trail Runs, and Wild Duluth Races anchor the calendar.
Cycling: Locals ride like the hill is part of the workout. The Duluth Traverse runs 40+ miles point to point, and the route uses 75% purpose-built singletrack above town. COGGS keeps the mountain bike scene moving, Ski Hut has a ride group, SpokeNGear in Two Harbors has a Sunday gravel ride, and Ski Hut West is a useful road and gravel hub. The climb is 3 km with 284 m of elevation gain. West Duluth, Skyline Parkway, Hawk Ridge, Homestead Road, Fox Farm Road, and Jean Duluth Road bring the climbs.
Season: Summer gives Duluth its best rhythm, with Going Bananas Run on May 30, Grandma's Marathon Race Weekend on June 19 and June 20, and Duluth Trails Festival on August 7, 8, and 9. July puts the 18th Annual Breezy Point 5K on Island Lake, and August brings the Unity In Our Community 1-Mile Fun Run. Locals use those months for base miles, intervals, singletrack, gravel, and long lake-backed rides. Winter changes the planning because seasonal singletrack closures can matter, and both runners and riders stay flexible around trail access.
