Eugene Marathon

The Eugene Marathon begins at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus, a fitting start for a race centered in one of America’s strongest running communities. Established in 2007, it features a full marathon, half marathon, 5K, and a children's run. The marathon course is a certified 26.2 miles, allowing runners to qualify for the Boston Marathon or the United States Olympic Trials, with official recognition for record-setting times. Live music is performed along the marathon and half-marathon paths and at the finish line, contributing to the event's local street festival atmosphere rather than a subdued time trial. The course winds through Eugene’s streets and bike paths beside the Willamette River, passing through downtown, the University of Oregon vicinity, Amazon Park, the outskirts of the South Hills, River Road, Delta Ponds, Alton Baker Park, and Springfield before concluding at Autzen Stadium. Participants will cross the Willamette River and the Owosso Drive footbridge. Portions of the route trace roads and trails associated with notable Oregon runners like Steve Prefontaine, Alberto Salazar, Bill McChesney, and Mary Decker Slaney. The race's motto, “Running in the Footsteps of Legends,” reflects Eugene’s history of hosting major track events and Olympic Marathon Trials; the first race attracted close to 5,000 participants along with approximately thirty elite athletes aiming for Trials standards.

Emerald City Trail Series

The Emerald City Trail Series is a five-week set of Thursday evening trail races at the Mt. Pisgah Trailhead in Eugene, Oregon. Big Timber Running Club hosts it, and every race starts at 6:30 PM PDT. The series has been running for five years, with runners able to enter the full five-race set or sign up for single nights. The races start near the Sheriff's Mounted Posse arena at the north end of Buford and use the wide trail network around Mt. Pisgah. The distances change each week: 4.7 miles, 3.4 miles, 8 miles, 3.7 miles, and 3 miles, so the series mixes shorter weeknight efforts with one longer trail race. Parking is on Buford Park Road beyond the North Trailhead Parking Lot gate, with a Lane County Parks permit or a Passport Parking permit required. The final race includes a post-race ceremony, giving the series a simple season-finale feel rather than ending at the finish line.

About cycling & running in Eugene-Springfield

TrackTown Miles And Valley Rides

Running: Locals treat Eugene-Springfield like a daily training camp, with Pre's Trail in Alton Baker Park, the Ruth Bascom river path, Amazon running trail, Rexius Trail, and Ridgeline Trail all in regular rotation. Amazon trail feels comfy because it is usually cushioned with mulch, and the river path shows you Eugene fast. The bridges force you to commit to a distance, especially on the Autzen to Valley River Center 10k loop. Big Timber Running Club, Run Hub Northwest, Eugene Running Company, Silenus Run Club, Drew Brew Crew, and Oregon Track Club keep the week honest. Eugene Marathon and Emerald City Trail Series anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride a deep mix of river loops, foothill roads, gravel, and singletrack. One popular route runs 7 km with 207 m of gain from Eugene Amtrak Station to Fern Ridge Reservoir, McKenzie View Drive, Springfield, Clearwater park, Mill Race Path, and Alton Baker Park. McKenzie 3 River Loop follows the Willamette, McKenzie, and Mohawk rivers, and it gives riders 43 km with 203 m of gain. GEARs, Bicycle Way of Life Cycling Team, Disciples of Dirt, and GOATS keep the scene moving. Spencer Butte, Mt. Pisgah, Mt Baldy, Hendricks Hill, South Hills Sampler, and Coburg Hills bring the climbing legs.

Season: Spring and fall give locals the best rhythm for base miles, intervals, Z2, crit legs, cyclocross practice, and trail time. Summer has some themed races like the Christmas 5K/10K/Half Marathon in July and Super Mom 5K/10K/Half Marathon at Kiwanis Park, which come with custom medals and race shirts. The city keeps runners out on the trails in all weather, and riders still find good winter spots when local dirt gets slick. Whypass works well outside Creswell and Lorane, and Maxxis shorties make Eugene trails fun in winter.
