Red River Ultrafest

Red River Ultrafest, Fargo/Moorhead's first ultramarathon, is based at a large shelter on the north side of a Moorhead, Minnesota park. Runners and walkers select a timed race of 3, 6, 12, or 24 hours and aim to cover maximum distance. Each time option includes a ruck division, with participants carrying a 35-pound pack. The 24-hour race begins in the evening; shorter races start the following morning. All participants finish on the same race-day evening, excluding the 3-hour and 6-hour fields. The course is a 5-mile loop starting on Gooseberry trails, crossing the bridge into Lindenwood, proceeding north to Dike East, and returning to Gooseberry. This loop format simplifies progress measurement, aid station resets, and lap continuation. Finishers receive an award, a shirt, and pizza. Achieving 100 miles in the run or 100K in the ruck earns a buckle. The main aid station is a central race feature, providing snacks and fuel. A water stop is located at the turnaround, and participants are asked to bring a collapsible cup due to limited event cups.

WoodTickr Gravel Fondo

WoodTickr Gravel Fondo sends riders onto mostly gravel roads in the rolling country near Hawley, Minnesota, not far from Minnesota Lakes Country. Organized by Flatlands Cycling and held in late June, it offers roughly 50, 100, and 150 kilometer options, allowing newer gravel riders to choose a shorter day while stronger riders can stretch out over a longer route. The short route is called the Crawler, with the longer options listed as the Nibbler and Full Bite. Final routes are set after road checks, then shared before the event through RideWithGPS. Riders can use printed cue sheets, a phone, or a bike computer loaded with a GPX file. The Crawler has signed turns from start to finish, but the roads are public, so helmets are required, lights are recommended, and headphones are discouraged in groups. WoodTickr is a grassroots ride for both beginners and experienced cyclists, and it is part of the Gravel 'Sota Series in that series' inaugural season.

About cycling & running in Fargo

Fargo-Moorhead Base Miles

Running: Locals run Fargo by linking the Red River paths with Gooseberry, Lindenwood, Dike East, and Island Park. Fargo runners treat the flat grid as honest Z2 ground, because the city gives you rhythm before it gives you hills. The full loop covers 84 km and gains 8 m, so intervals stay clean. The full loop covers 84 km and gains 8 m, so intervals stay clean. Fargo Mini Marathon, SHORT SHORTS 5K @ Swing Barrel, Red River Ultrafest, Caboose on the Loose, and Greg Grooters Memorial 5K & Kids Run keep the calendar moving.

Cycling: Locals ride the Fargo-Moorhead Trail System and the Red River paths when they want easy spin miles. Fargo had some really nice bike paths pretty much everywhere, and that still feels true on a steady weekday ride. FlatLands Cycling advocates for cyclists and promotes the sport in Fargo-Moorhead, so the scene has a real local backbone. Gravel, gravel, gravel sits everywhere around the Red River Valley. The first route runs 7 miles with 141 ft of climbing. The second route runs 4 miles with 3,259 ft of gain. Red River Rippr, WoodChippr Gravel Fondo, and WoodTickr Gravel Fondo are the anchor hits.

Season: August gives Fargo its best outdoor window, though locals start early to beat the heat and the wind. Summer riders cross the Red River into Minnesota, point toward Moorhead, Dilworth, Sabin, Georgetown, Hawley, Kindred, Rustad, Harwood, or Horace, and choose the day by wind direction. Summer runners keep Gooseberry, Lindenwood, Dike East, Island Park, and Evergreen Meadows in regular rotation for base miles and workouts. Winter changes the feel for both sports, because the flat city stops feeling easy when cold and wind take over. Locals keep the same routes in mind, but winter turns pace, grip, and layers into the workout.
