Spring Dirt Pile Short Track at New Belgium Brewing

The Spring Dirt Pile Short Track at New Belgium Brewing is a six-race short track mountain bike series held at New Belgium Brewing in Fort Collins. Races occur on consecutive Tuesday evenings in May and June. It uses a fast, mass-start dirt-circuit format where riders complete multiple laps. Categories range from Strider-bike kids to adult classes. Registration is online only, opening the Wednesday before each race, with category caps for safety. The courses are designed for local, approachable racing, with beginner categories recommended for first-timers. Kids and junior riders navigate a mix of gravel road and singletrack or dirt trail. Mountain bikes are advised, though any bike with non-slick tires is suitable. Spectators may gather at the venue, cheer on participants, and access the food truck and beer garden. SendTown Bike Club, a local nonprofit, organizes the series, which serves as its primary fundraiser for youth cycling and its goal of fostering lifelong interest in bikes through adventure and community. End-of-series prizes are provided by partners, and all Dirt Pile course categories feature official timing as part of a pilot program.

Blue Sky Trail Marathon & Half Marathon

The Blue Sky Trail Marathon & Half Marathon is a September trail-running series held near Fort Collins, Colorado. It offers half marathon, marathon, and 50K distances. All races begin in Horsetooth Mountain Open Space in Larimer County. The marathon starts and finishes at the Blue Sky Trail trailhead. The majority of the course is on singletrack, with sections of gravel paths and rough, rocky terrain. The route crosses Horsetooth Mountain Park and Devil's Backbone Open Space, providing a foothills environment instead of a road-race atmosphere. The marathon has a 9-hour time limit, and this series has been held annually since 2008.

The Long View Marathon

The Long View Marathon runs point to point between Fort Collins and Loveland in northern Colorado. The full marathon begins at Edora Park and concludes at Fairgrounds Park. The same finish area hosts the half marathon, which starts at Fossil Creek Park, and a 5K centered on Fairgrounds Park. The races occur in October, with staggered morning starts for the marathon, half marathon, and 5K. The route incorporates sections of the Long View and Front Range bike paths, meaning the longer races utilize a paved-path corridor instead of a closed downtown loop. Packet pickup is available at Altitude Running in Fort Collins prior to race day and at each race’s start area on race morning, subject to a strict cutoff. Marathon and half-marathon prizes feature custom works by local artist Amy Hayman, gift cards to local businesses, overall awards, and age-group prizes; the 5K offers overall and masters awards.

About cycling & running in Fort Collins

Fort Collins-Loveland Training Notes

Running: Locals run Fort Collins-Loveland from river path to foothill dirt. The Poudre River Trail gives runners 21 miles of paved path, and it often carries crushed gravel alongside it. 7 paved miles and meets the Poudre when base miles need to stay smooth. Spring Canyon Park has it all, with lines toward Pineridge natural area, Maxwell Natural Area, and Horsetooth. The route to Horsetooth covers 8 miles with a 656-foot incline. Fort Collins Running Club has kept the scene moving since 1971. Choice City Running Festival and Blue Sky Trail Marathon & Half Marathon sit on the local calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride from Old Town Fort Collins toward foothills, prairie, gravel, and brewery laps. Fort Collins Cycling Club keeps the group-ride rhythm with A, B, C, and D pace categories plus Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday rides. The route covers 6 km and 457 m of climbing as it swings around the southern end of Horsetooth Reservoir Overlook, rolls on to Masonville, descends into Loveland, and comes back by Cathy Fromme Prairie Natural Area. Fort Collins Northern Expanse Loop mixes 55% gravel with 45% pavement and dirt roads. Blue Sky Trail connects west of Horsetooth Reservoir toward Devil’s Backbone. Spring Dirt Pile Short Track at New Belgium Brewing brings the crit energy on dirt.

Season: Spring and fall give runners and cyclists the cleanest training window here. The scorching heat of summer has given way in fall, and the chill of winter has yet to arrive. Fort Collins Cycling Club makes summer social with dinner rides in May, June, July, and August, while runners keep to shaded Poudre River Trail miles or move workouts earlier. Northern Colorado can feel windy and bright in exposed areas, so Z2 days need a little patience. Winter changes the rhythm more than the identity. The foothills near Fort Collins stay rideable much of the winter, and runners still have paved paths when singletrack needs time.
