Kickin Assphault Half Marathon, 10k, 1 Mile run/walk, 1/2 mile Kid's Dash

Kickin' Assphault takes place on a late May morning at Elks Riverside Park in Great Falls, Montana. All events begin and end near the tennis courts and pavilion. The race offers a half marathon, 10k, 5k, 1-mile run/walk, and a half-mile Kid's Dash. This variety suits runners aiming for 13.1 miles, walkers, families, and children completing a short park loop. The half marathon begins earliest, followed by the 10k and 5k, with the kids' dash and 1-mile walk starting later. The half marathon is open to runners and walkers; however, walkers who start early will not receive a timed walk result. The longer courses utilize Elks Riverside Park and the River's Edge Trail, with the start and finish located under the timing arch by the tennis courts. The kids' run and 1-mile walk are contained within the park on a half-mile loop, making them simple for spectators to watch. The course is described simply as flat, fast, and beautiful. All events proceed regardless of weather conditions. Registration is managed online, and a portion of the proceeds from RaceMT events benefits local causes based on participation.

Race Montana Triathlon and Duathlon

The Race Montana Triathlon and Duathlon, held at Electric City Water Park in Great Falls, Montana, is a pool-start multisport event. The adult sprint triathlon begins early. The main triathlon features a 500-meter swim in a 50-meter pool, followed by a 12.2-mile bike leg and a 3.1-mile run. This local event, now in its 18th year, offers multiple entry options: adult individuals, sprint teams, youth racers, and a duathlon for those who prefer to omit the swim. The sprint bike course is largely manageable, though not entirely flat. The initial 5 miles and final 6 miles are relatively level, with mile 6 featuring a steady climb to the turnaround. The run is fast and flat, providing a manageable finish after the bike's incline. The duathlon commences from the bike transition area with a flat 1-mile run, followed by either the full 12.2-mile bike with a 3.1-mile run or a shorter 3-mile bike with a 1-mile run. Youth events are also included, with a long course comprising a 100-meter swim, 3-mile bike, and 1-mile run, and a short course for younger children consisting of a 50-meter swim, 1-mile bike, and a half-mile run.

About cycling & running in Great Falls, Montana

Great Falls Base Miles

Running: Locals run the River’s Edge Trail because it gives Great Falls a real daily spine along the Missouri River. You can run 5 miles past Gibson Park and downtown when you want simple Z2. GrrAnimals Running Club goes Tuesday and Thursday at 6am, and Tuesday is speed/agility while Thursday is hills/strength. Blister Sisters and Misters keep Sunday mornings honest with 6- to 12-mile group runs. Wednesday Night Runners meet at Access Fitness West at 5pm in summer for one-hour group runs or hill repeats. Burn The Bird 10k, Race Montana Triathlon and Duathlon 2026, and Kickin Assphault Half Marathon anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Great Falls Bicycle Club sets the tone with road rides, mountain bike rides, trail building, and twice-weekly training rides. The club runs no-rider-left-behind mountain bike rides every Wednesday, and locals use the River’s Edge Trail when they want dirt without leaving town. The River’s Edge Trail carries 53 miles of trail, and Mayhem on The River’s Edge Trail puts 300 acres of expert singletrack east of the Lewis and Clark Overlook of Rainbow Falls. Gibson Flats Loop runs 31.6 miles, Cascade to Great Falls runs 40.8 miles, and Logging Creek Rd to Stockett Rd runs 43.9 miles. The Lewis and Clark Gravel Classic starts in Cascade.

Season: Spring and summer carry the best rhythm, with April through October fitting Summer Wilderness Walks and May through September feeling like the main growing-season window. July and August bring hot, dry days, so locals get intervals done early and let long Z2 rides breathe later when the day opens up. Great Falls still keeps you honest because the average growing season lasts 122 days, and freezes can show up close to the edges. Winter changes both sports fast, with very cold, long, snowy stretches, chinook warm spells, Wednesday Night Runners moving to CMR High School stair repeats, and Montana Wilderness Association Winter Wilderness Walks running January through March.
