Silver Moon Race

The Silver Moon Race mirrors the historical competition to reach the Moon, from the initial impact of a human-made object on the lunar surface to the first crewed landing. It recounts a space-race narrative, not a terrestrial one: Soviet Luna missions, U.S. Surveyor and Apollo programs, and subsequent Chinese, Indian, Japanese, and U.S. commercial efforts each represent milestones in the endeavor to land spacecraft safely on the Moon. The course is the Moon itself, primarily its near side until China’s Chang’e 4 successfully reached the far side. The most significant event is Apollo 11, observed live by approximately 500 million viewers, succeeded by five additional crewed Apollo landings before human exploration ceased. The uncrewed missions are equally important: Luna 9 and Luna 13 transmitted the first images from the surface, Surveyor demonstrated U.S. soft-landing capabilities, and later missions resumed lunar landings after a considerable hiatus.

Tulare Santa Fe Trail-A-Thon 5k

The Tulare Santa Fe Trail-A-Thon 5k is a community run and walk in Tulare, California, offering a single 5K distance for runners and walkers. The Tulare Sunrise Rotary Club hosts the event, typically starting at 9:00 a.m. in November, a month when Tulare generally has mild weather suitable for running. The race starts and finishes at Live Oak Park, centering the day around a local gathering spot instead of a point-to-point course. Now in its 23rd year, the event supports the Rotary club’s High School Scholarship Program, assisting local high school seniors with college or trade school expenses. All finishers get a commemorative medal and lanyard, along with a Rotary participant pin, and top finishers in each age group also receive medals.

Silver Moon Race: Kings River

The Silver Moon Race: Kings River is an overnight running event in Reedley, California, held on the weekend closest to the full moon. Runners start at sunset and continue through the night until sunrise, with options from 12K, 20K, and 40K to 6-hour, 12-hour, 24-hour, and 100-mile races. Relay teams of 2, 3, or 4 people can also participate, accommodating both solo runners and groups sharing the night. The course follows a 2.5-mile loop through Central California orchards and vineyards alongside the Kings River. This loop format ensures support is readily available, allows runners to establish a steady pace, and provides a less daunting entry for those new to longer distances. The event includes overnight support and camping, blending the challenge of endurance running with a full-moon running camp atmosphere by the river.

About cycling & running in Hanford-Corcoran

Hanford-Corcoran Base Miles

Running: Locals keep the running scene simple and steady here. The first route covers 0 meters with 0 meters of altitude change. The second route covers 41 km and gains +51 m, so it works for long base miles without much drama. The third route covers 70 km and gains +1 m, so it fits an easy shakeout. The anchor race list stays nearby with Kingsburg Dala Horse Trot 10K & 2 Mile Run/Walk, The Great Pumpkin Race 5K & 10K Run/Walk, and 5th Annual ProYouth Color Run.

Cycling: Riders get a small local scene with Kings County Velo Club at the center. Kings County Velo Club is based in Hanford, has 480 members, and runs everything from social rides to fast paced rides. The club meets for social rides at Panera Bread in Hanford, with past rides on Mondays at 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM. The trail is a 0-meter spin, and Trailforks calls it one of the only public trail systems in Hanford. Hanford-Corcoran does not hand you named climbs, so locals build crit legs and Z2 on flat paved trails.

Season: Locals treat the season like a flatland training calendar. Summer puts The Great American Race on July 4, 2026, and that makes the season feel like intervals, early starts, and short loops when the day gets serious. Freedom Park stays useful because the loop is paved, easy, and quick to repeat. The 5th Annual ProYouth Color Run gives runners road and grass sections, so shoes matter more than elevation. Winter does not come with a big named shift in the brief, so runners and riders keep working the same paved paths, grass-field edges, and steady base miles.
