The Hickory Summer Track Series is a Thursday-evening meet in June at the Lenoir-Rhyne University outdoor track in Hickory, North Carolina. It is run as a four-meet series, with Lenoir-Rhyne University partnering with Hickory Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism. Athletes can enter the full series or individual meets, and they earn points across the month in track and field events. The event list covers sprints, middle distance, relays, and field events: 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, 1 mile, 2 miles, 4x100 relay, long jump, triple jump, shot put, high jump, pole vault, and discus. Age groups start at 5 and under and continue through 60-plus, so the meet is built for kids, teens, adults, and older competitors on the same track. Series awards require racing in at least two of the four meets. Youth training for ages 6 to 18 is offered at Hickory High School and led by Coach Jimmy Fuller.
Listed in our event index as The Dam Half Marathon.
Running: Hickory runners keep plenty of short-race rhythm through Fleet Feet Hickory, the Hickory 5K Series, and the Hickory Crawdads & Fleet Feet Hickory Home Run Trot 5k. P. Frans Stadium gives the Home Run Trot its local hook, and Hickory High School gives the Hickory Summer Track Series a clean place for intervals. The route covers 73 km and gains 73 m. The long-day crowd uses Ridge-to-Bridge Marathon, Table Rock Climb, The Scream Half Marathon, and HKY 100 Mile Ultra Trail Race as anchor races.
Cycling: Lenoir riders talk about Overmountain Cycles and then point you north toward Pisgah National Forest. The route covers 9 km with 955 m of elevation. Wilson Creek Lollipop stays 99% gravel, and Michael Lowther / Overmountain Cycles originally shared it. The route is 4 km with 1,912 m of elevation. Maple Sally brings the punch, because the winding trip down Maple Sally has lots of short, punchy climbs.
Season: Season planning stays honest here because the brief does not name exact best months. Summer brings the big caveat, because locals have logged very hot days even on the good routes. Runners keep the Hickory Summer Track Series, 5K work, and early Z2 miles in play when the heat sits heavy. Riders lean toward creekside gravel, base miles, and steady pacing through the mix of woods and farmland. Winter details are not listed in the brief, so locals shift by feel and keep the country-road miles simple. Pisgah National Forest still sits north when climbing legs want work.
