Running: Buffalo Bayou Park gives runners the classic in-town loop, and the full lap runs about 8 miles on paved trail. Locals run 4 miles when they want steady Z2 without thinking too hard. Memorial Park keeps a 3-mile gravel trail for daily laps, while Rice University Trail and Hermann Park handle shorter shakeouts. Terry Hershey Park brings seven paved miles and lots of wooded cover. HARRA, USA Fit Marathon, and The Woodlands Running Club keep the calendar moving. Chevron Houston Marathon is the anchor event, with Texas Marathon, USA Fit Marathon, and Legacy Capital The Woodlands Marathon close behind.
Cycling: Houston riding is pancake flat, so locals build base miles on the 345-mile interconnected bikeway network and the 80 miles of bikeable nature trails. Spring Creek Nature Trail and The Woodlands MTB Dirt Church cover dirt days, with 18 miles of singletrack and a cyclocross course in town. Houston Bicycle Club has been around since 1964, and NWCC, SWCC, Space City Cycling Club, Houston Ladies Cycling Club, Critical Mass Houston, and Major Taylor Cycling Club all add options. BP MS Houston to Austin Ride and Tour de Houston are the big anchors. The climbs mostly do not exist, so riders chase wind, pace lines, crit legs, and gravel within 90 minutes.
Season: Houston rewards early starts for both running and riding. The city sits in that useful 50 to 80 degree range for much of the year, so fall, winter, and spring carry a lot of quality work. Summer changes the rules, because June can hit 95F and the temp is generally in the 70s around 7am. Locals get rolling early, use Terry Hershey Park or wooded trail cover, and keep intervals honest. Winter stays mild, so runners keep marathon blocks alive and cyclists hold Z2, shop rides, and gran fondo prep without much interruption.
