About cycling & running in JacksonJackson Base Miles
Running: Locals run Jackson through Fondren, Belhaven, Eastover, Northeast Jackson, and the parks when they want steady base miles. JXN Run Club meets Sundays at 9:00 AM at 1399 Lakeland Drive, and every pace is legal here on the 1-mile, 2-mile, or 3-mile routes. You can piece together a 75-mile loop using Old Canton, Meadowbrook, and State Street. LeFleur’s Bluff State Park gives runners a mix of sandy and gravel trails, roads, boardwalks. 601 Day 5K, Watermelon Classic 5K, and Farish Street 5K keep the calendar honest.
Cycling: Riders use the Canton, Madison, Ridgeland, and Jackson area for Z2 days, Trace miles, and a little gravel attitude. The route covers 3 km of riding and gains 778 m, so the legs get work without needing mountains. Another section runs 7 km and gains 223 m. One section runs 9 km and gains 149 m with relatively quiet multi-use trail time and canopy cover. Fondren's long hills are where locals go when intervals need bite. The brief names no cycling club or anchor crit, gran fondo, or cyclocross race, so the Trace works as the anchor ride.
Season: September and October are the best months because the air dries out and the pace feels normal again. Fall colors usually start in early November and last through Thanksgiving, so long runs and steady rides still feel good. Summer changes everything because July and August are the worst. The last week of June through July 4 brings the brutal summer heat and humidity, and the stretch lasts about 3 months until late September. Morning runs are your friend during summer, but 90+% humidity and 95-100ºF temps still make Z2 feel earned. Winter stays mild, snow is rare, and January is often rainy.
