The Skirmish

The Skirmish is a Delta gravel cycling festival in Jonesboro, Arkansas. The main race offers 24-, 43-, 63-, and 100-mile options. It takes place on a late-May weekend focused on gravel riding. Activities include a community slow roll, shakeout rides, packet pickup, live music in downtown Jonesboro, the main race, awards, and a recovery ride. The 100-mile race offers equal $750 prize purses for men and women. Shorter routes accommodate riders new to gravel or those not seeking an all-day effort. The route is described as a “tale of 2 rides.” Riders first encounter the rolling hills of Crowley’s Ridge, a landform shaped over millions of years, then transition into the broad farmlands of the Delta. This contrast provides more variety than a flat farm-road course, featuring ridge riding followed by open agricultural terrain. The festival supports Jonesboro’s local cycling community through the slow roll and shakeout rides, making the weekend accessible to racers, club riders, first-time gravel participants, and long-distance specialists.

Creek Trail Crusher

Creek Trail Crusher is a timed trail race at Rotary Park in Paragould, Arkansas, offering 6, 12, and 24-hour options beginning at 8:00 am. It employs a backyard-ultra style format on a paved route without street crossings. The challenge focuses on maintaining a consistent effort over repeated cycles rather than technical terrain. Each cycle covers 4.167 miles out-and-back from the start/finish area toward the 8 Mile Creek Trail. Runners must complete each cycle within 59 minutes and 59 seconds. A new cycle starts at the top of each hour, with strict adherence to start times. Participants not back from a cycle or not ready for the next are eliminated. The races are last participant standing events; the final runner wins if no one completes the full duration, and the first to finish the last cycle wins if multiple runners reach it. Crews, nutrition, hydration, and aid are permitted only at the start/finish area, though runners can carry supplies on the course. Lunch and dinner are provided at the start/finish area, and proceeds benefit the Paragould Police Department.

Freedom Finishers 5K and 1 Mile

Freedom Finishers hosts a July 4th 5K and 1-mile race at Rotary Park in Paragould, Arkansas. The 5K begins at 7:30 AM. The 1-mile option allows families, walkers, younger children, and those not running the full 5K to participate in the holiday morning event. The 5K follows an out-and-back route along the 8 Mile Ditch Trail. Runners, walkers, strollers, and pets are permitted. A $10 discount is available for military, police, and fire service members who show ID on race morning. T-shirts are guaranteed for those who register by the cutoff date; any remaining shirts will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

About cycling & running in Jonesboro

Jonesboro Training Notes

Running: Jonesboro gives runners a small-scene setup with enough options for real base miles. The route covers 84 km and gains 37 m. 4 miles of chat trail skirt the lake's edge. Bland Park and 8 Mile Creek Trail add easy local variety. King's Ranch Ministries and Hope Found NEA show up around the race scene, while Run2Remember, the 2nd Annual Help Them Stay 5K, and Running on the Ridge make solid anchor events.

Cycling: Craighead Forest Park is the first stop for riders who want dirt close to town. Approximately 13 miles of updated mountain bike trails weave through the forest, and the beginner trail runs about 4 miles. The advanced trail runs 7 miles and tests even seasoned riders. The park has 2 miles of paved road around it for easy spins, then go south for gravel. Craighead 323 Road to Greene 326 brings cool banked corners and loose low spots. CR 372 has up and down hill, and one east-to-west gravel climb gives the legs a real check.

Season: May sets up well for cyclists, because The Skirmish starts downtown with 24, 43, 63, and 100 mile options. June keeps the riding scene moving with Ride Against Trafficking, and locals still get Thursday Z2 miles at the Native Brew Works Slow Roll, which covers about eight miles. July belongs to runners who like short, sharp heat checks, with Four on the 4th Paragould and Freedom Finishers 5K and 1 Mile on the calendar. Winter shifts the mood toward shorter loops, steady intervals, and race-pace reminders like the Jonesboro Jingle Bell Run/Walk 5k route.
