Mighty Mississinewa Triathlon

The Mighty Mississinewa Triathlon begins at Miami State Recreation Area in Peru, Indiana, with the swim taking place in Mississinewa Reservoir. This September multisport event offers Sprint, Olympic, and Half Iron triathlon distances, alongside duathlons, aquabikes, open-water swims, and two- or three-person relays for the Sprint and Olympic distances. The Sprint course covers a 500-yard swim, a 12.5-mile bike ride, and a 3.1-mile run. The Olympic course includes a 1500-meter swim, a 25-mile bike ride, and a 6.2-mile run. The Half Iron course consists of a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run. The race is USAT sanctioned, chip timed, open to participants aged 12 and older for most events, and has a capacity of 1000 racers. The course utilizes reservoir terrain instead of city streets. The bike segment features smooth, low-traffic paved roads and crosses the dam. The run course combines pavement, grass, and dirt paths. A previous participant described the Olympic race as clearly marked, with two loops for each discipline: swim, bike, and run. They also noted that wind can create choppy water conditions and increase the difficulty of the bike course, even on relatively flat sections. Race morning is efficient, with park entry before dawn, packet pickup and last-minute registration before the start, and a required briefing at the beach. Ruble Racing is the organizer, and all finishers receive medals, participants get shirts, and awards are presented for overall and age-group winners.

Mighty Mississinewa Triathlon (Sprint, Olympic & Half Iron)

The Mighty Mississinewa Triathlon begins at the Miami State Recreation Area beach near Peru, Indiana, with racing commencing at 8:00 a.m. Athletes can choose from Sprint, Olympic, and Half Iron triathlons, along with corresponding duathlon and aquabike divisions concluding at Transition 2. The Sprint covers a 500-yard swim, 12.5-mile bike, and 3.1-mile run. The Olympic involves a 1500-meter swim, 25-mile bike, and 6.2-mile run. The Half Iron extends to a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, and 13.1-mile run. Sprint and Olympic triathletes have the option to form two- or three-person relay teams. This USAT-sanctioned event is chip timed, limited to 1000 participants, and provides live results with split times. The swim takes place in Mississinewa Reservoir, starting from the beach in a time-trial format, with timing beginning as each racer enters the water. Buoys indicate turns, boats monitor the course, and an optional mass start is available for those preferring it over the individual start. The bike route follows low-traffic roads with minimal inclines, and the run is on a paved trail within the park. Aid stations are located in transition and approximately every mile on the run, offering water, Gatorade, and Coke. Race morning includes packet and chip pickup, registration, body marking, and transition setup before a required briefing. All finishers earn medals, participants receive shirts, and awards are presented to overall, masters, and age-group winners.

About cycling & running in Kokomo

Kokomo Training Notes

Running: Locals get steady miles on the Peshewa Nature Trail, the Jackson Morrow Walk path, the Industrial Heritage Trail, the Nickel Plate Trail, and the Walk of Excellence Trail. Club Kokomo Roadrunners keeps the rhythm simple with Wednesday Night Group Run at Highland Park at 5:30 PM and Sunday Morning Group Run from Buckeye and Jackson at 8 AM. Highland Park works for intervals, Foster Park fits easy Z2, and Jackson Morrow Park shows up on race day. Norris Insurance - Kokomo 5K, Haynes Apperson 5K 2026, and David Bruce Race for the Record & Predict a Mile anchor the local calendar.

Cycling: Break-Away Bicycle Club runs weekly group rides across the flats and through Howard County. Monday and Wednesday evenings hit western Howard County from First Christian Church, following Wildcat Creek and the New London and Russiaville area mini-climbs. Tuesday nights leave the North Kokomo Nickel Plate Trailhead for county roads northeast of Kokomo. Thursday rides tour eastern Howard County from Greentown Wesleyan Church, and Sunday rides keep it family-friendly on the multi-use trails network. The Thursday route covers 2 km with 228 m ascent.

Season: April through October is prime riding season, and Break-Away Bicycle Club builds most of its weekly schedule around that window. May through July adds the Wednesday morning social ride from Greentown Wesleyan Church, which suits base miles and easy legs. Summer brings the SunStroke 74 ride and Sizzling Century, and locals mean it when they say a ride is traditionally very HOT, so bring plenty of water. Winter changes the mood for both sports, with runners leaning on familiar parks and trails while Tuesday rides are cancelled when it is raining or below 50°F.
