Two Cities Marathon

The Twin Cities Marathon is a 26.2-mile road race from Minneapolis to St. Paul, typically held on the first weekend of October. It developed from separate marathon events in each city, with origins tracing back to the Land of Lakes Marathon, a small Minnesota Distance Running Association event that began with just five participants. Currently, it ranks among the largest marathons in the United States, with Medtronic serving as the official sponsor. The course begins in Minneapolis, passes through downtown, and continues along parkways beside lakes and rivers before concluding in St. Paul. The marathon is now the centerpiece of a broader race weekend: adults can compete in the TC 10 Mile on Sunday, while Saturday features the TC 10K, TC 5K, a family mile, toddler races, a diaper dash, and the Mascot Invitational. Thousands of volunteers support the event, and its early days were notably unconventional: the original Land of Lakes Marathon lacked a set course, imposed a strict 3:30 time limit, and was once free to enter.

Loppet Field Day and Trail Loppet

The Trail Loppet is a rugged urban trail running weekend in Theodore Wirth Park, Minneapolis’s largest regional park. The main races are a half marathon, 10K, and 5K on park trails, with the race base at the Trailhead on Theodore Wirth Parkway. Loppet Field Day adds a kids’ program at the same park, built around short trail runs and field-style challenges rather than a standard road-race format. The Trail Loppet courses use Theo Wirth’s wooded, uneven trail network instead of city streets, so the event feels closer to a trail race tucked inside Minneapolis than a flat urban run. Sunday courses start at the Trailhead and finish at Utepils Brewing, where runners get music and a free Utepils drink after racing. Field Day begins with untimed 1-mile and half-mile trail runs for kids, then shifts into trail and field games for children with different abilities and comfort levels.

About cycling & running in Minneapolis

Twin Cities Base Miles

Running: Locals run the Chain of Lakes when they want easy rhythm and quick choices. Lake of the Isles, Bde Maka Ska, Lake Harriet, Brownie Lake, and Cedar Lake each give you 1 to 3 miles around the water. Battle Creek gives you a dirt loop that runs right around 5 miles on hard pack, wood chips, and grass. Minnehaha Trail runs 5 miles toward Fort Snelling when you want views without overthinking it. Mill City Running holds Monday and Tuesday 6:00 PM community runs with 2 to 7 mile options. Twin Cities Marathon, Victory Races, Stars and Strides Minneapolis, and Loppet Field Day and Trail Loppet anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride the Chain of Lakes, St. Paul river parkways, and the urban paths for Z2, commuting, and steady base miles. St. Paul gives riders 243 miles of low-traffic streets and river parkways, so weekday spins stay simple. Theodore Wirth Park handles easier gravel rides, while the River Bottoms and Fort Snelling area bring tougher gravel adventures. The Mississippi River Valley puts the real bite on the north side with stone bluffs along the river. Twin Cities Bicycling Club leads group rides across pace and difficulty levels, and TCBC shows up around St. Paul Classic, Twin Cities Bicycle Tour, and Mankato River Ramble. Great River Energy bicycle festival sits as a bigger anchor event.

Season: Spring and summer are the best months because the bike paths in Minneapolis and St. Paul are clear of snow and flooded with cyclists. Spring averages 7°C, so locals run early, ride early, and save intervals for cooler windows. Summer sometimes pushes 32°C or higher, so long Z2 days work better near creeks, lakes, and the Mississippi River. 7 days per year. Runners keep moving on familiar loops, and cyclists swap toward fat bike, trainer, or snow-clear path days.
