California State University Monterey Bay in Seaside hosts its yearly homecoming, a valued time when the Otter community unites to honor connection, tradition, and pride. This event, RAFT Weekend, serves as a gathering for students, alumni, and friends, marking a key date in the university's schedule. Among the activities, Monte's 5K provides a chance for a community run, set against the backdrop of this spirited weekend. Participants will find themselves in a festive atmosphere, experiencing the distinct OtterPride that characterizes the weekend's events and traditions.

The Big Sur River Run is an October benefit race in Big Sur, California, featuring a 5K walk/run and a certified, chip-timed 10K. The 5K is designated as a Family Fun Run or Walk, with adult and under-12 entries available for both distances. The event emphasizes participation alongside competition, welcoming walkers, families, local runners, and faster 10K competitors to share the same occasion, while prizes are awarded to the 10K winners and top finishers. Both routes consist of flat blacktop loops alongside the Big Sur River, crossing the redwood and oak grove campgrounds of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. The race benefits Big Sur Fire and the Big Sur Health Center, two local services vital in a remote coastal community where assistance may be distant. Since 1981, participants have helped fund these organizations through the event, which also includes live music and a post-race gathering.
