Parkersburg News and Sentinel Half Marathon and Two Mile Race

Thousands of spectators line Market Street before the Parkersburg Homecoming Festival Parade, with the half marathon finishing directly into that crowd. The Parkersburg News and Sentinel Half Marathon and Two Mile Race is a Saturday morning event in Parkersburg, West Virginia. It features a half marathon, a two-mile run and walk, competitive walking divisions, and wheelchair rim push or hand cycle divisions. The half marathon begins downtown at 8 a.m., with the wheelchair field starting ten minutes prior. The two-mile race commences shortly after from Third and Juliana streets, near the Towne Square Parking Garage. The half marathon serves as the RRCA West Virginia State Championship. Its course departs the city, crosses nearby West Virginia roads, then circles back into the commercial district for a Market Street conclusion. The two-mile race is also an RRCA West Virginia Championship, concluding at Sixth and Market streets. This race includes Company, Family, and School team scoring, calculated from each team’s four fastest participants. Half marathon participants receive a tech shirt, pasta dinner, finisher medal, and a post-race pizza lunch. Two-mile participants get a T-shirt, with dinner and lunch tickets available for purchase by them and their guests. Awards are separated by event; the two-mile ceremony takes place at Bicentennial Park, and the half marathon awards are presented near the finish line before the parade commences.

Challenge at Mountwood

Each spring, all classes at the Challenge at Mountwood start from the marina parking lot at Mountwood Park, located 12 miles east of Parkersburg, West Virginia. This cross-country mountain bike race takes place within a 2,600-acre park system featuring over 30 miles of trails, predominantly singletrack. The race is included in the West Virginia Mountain Bike Association’s cross-country point series and also contributes to the Ohio Mountain Bike Championship, attracting participants from both sides of the Ohio River. Riders select courses based on their class: beginners navigate 7 to 8 miles with approximately 900 feet of elevation gain, sport riders tackle 14 to 16 miles with about 1,750 feet of climbing, and expert riders compete on 20 to 21 miles with around 2,600 feet of ascent. The event has been held for over thirty years, with entry fees supporting trail tools, supplies, and upkeep at Mountwood and adjacent parks. The River Valley Mountain Bike Association, a volunteer organization, manages 245 miles of trails within a 45-mile radius and organizes trail workdays on the first Saturday of each month. A kids skills clinic, led by the local NICA team, is also part of race day, accommodating participants from young children to riders in their 80s.

McDonough Trail Race

The McDonough Trail Race takes place in July at McDonough Wildlife Refuge in Vienna, West Virginia. The race starts at the refuge on Rosemar Road. Runners complete an 8-mile race by doing two laps of a 4-mile loop. Walkers cover the same loop once for a 4-mile walk. Each lap involves approximately 430 feet of climbing. The course is approachable yet offers genuine trail challenges. The loop winds through forest and past duck marshes within the wildlife refuge, giving the event a nature preserve atmosphere rather than a road race feel. It is part of the River City Runners and Walkers Series. Completing this event counts as one of six races required to earn a personalized jacket at the series awards banquet. Now in its second edition, the McDonough Frontier Trail Race attracts both runners and walkers.

About cycling & running in Parkersburg

Parkersburg-Vienna Training Notes

Running: Parkersburg runners keep it simple and local. The route runs 5 miles to the Parkersburg city limits. Locals use that paved stretch for Z2, strides, and easy shakeouts from the Ohio Valley Rowing Club access. The full loop covers 44 km with 18 m of gain. The shorter option runs 16 km with 2 m of gain. River City Runners and Walkers Club anchors the scene, and the Kid Series keeps families around the races.

Cycling: Parkersburg-Vienna riders get paved trail, rail trail, and singletrack without making a production of it. The Parkersburg Ohio River Trail handles easy spins along the Ohio River. The McDonough Trail gives locals a 3-mile loop through forests and duck marshes with up to 430 feet of elevation gain per loop. Mountwood Park has 4 miles of singletrack, and The Challenge at Mountwood is the anchor event. North Bend Rail Trail stretches 72 miles, so base miles can turn into a choose-your-own-adventure type of ride. The climbs sit on McDonough and Mountwood, with serious hills and grades up to 20%.

Season: Spring is the cleanest target for both sports because The Challenge at Mountwood lands then and the trails feel worth the drive. May brings the Red White and Boom 5K Color Run, and June stacks Kicks4Kids 5K Run/Walk with the Chick-Fil-A 10k Road Race and Two-Mile run/walk. August belongs to the Parkersburg News and Sentinel Half Marathon and Two Mile Race, so runners build intervals and longer steady work through summer. Locals ride early in summer when the Z2 feels better. November shifts the scene toward the 48th Annual Parkersburg Turkey Trot, and winter turns training into maintenance miles, park laps, and shorter spins.
