Detweiller at Dark transforms Detweiller Park in Peoria, Illinois into a nighttime cross-country meet illuminated by 135,000 watts of lights. This summer evening race series, presented by Under Armour, begins its first main race at 7:00 PM, with subsequent high school races continuing late into the night. The event utilizes Detweiller Park’s historic cross-country course and attracts over 2,300 participants. The schedule includes an Open Race, junior high girls and boys races, high school open and varsity-style races, and a free kids’ fun run approximately 1,200 meters long. Recent middle school graduates may enter either the middle school or high school races, and recent high school graduates can opt for the high school or open race. This flexibility accommodates runners transitioning between school levels, as well as adults.
The Steamboat Classic begins downtown Peoria, Illinois, at Adams and Main streets, offering a fast 4-mile race, a challenging 15K, and a 1-mile Fun Run/Walk. Its origins trace back to the 1970s when the Illinois Valley Striders organized a 176-runner event from downtown to Glen Oak Park and return. The event welcomes runners, joggers, walkers of all ages and ability levels, attracting around 1,100 participants in a recent year. The 4-mile course is USATF certified and remains flat through Peoria’s downtown streets, contributing to its reputation as one of the world’s fastest 4-mile races. Both men’s and women’s unofficial world-best road times have been recorded there, by runners such as Josphat Machuka and Delillah Asiago of Kenya. The 15K presents a different challenge, with hilly loops through Glen Oak Park, earning it the nickname Illinois’ toughest 15K.
Running: Locals get their easy miles on the Rock Island Greenway, the Illinois River Bluff Trail, and the trail by the river. Springdale Cemetery and Glen Oak Park give runners scenic hills without leaving town. Grandview Drive works for a short run with lovely views and a few hills. Junction City puts runners on the Rock Island Trail, and locals usually like going south. Run 309 and Miles with Friends meet on Saturdays and sometimes Sundays. Illinois Valley Striders keeps the race calendar moving. Steamboat Classic, Bridge to Bridge Run, Memorial Day Salute, and Main Street Mile are the anchor names.
Cycling: Cyclists get a clean mix here: paved trail, country road, gravel, and singletrack. Rock Island Greenway spans 13 miles from Dunlap down to Downtown Peoria. Rock Island Trail runs 38 miles from the Bob Michel Bridge to Toulon, so locals can stack base miles north. East Peoria connects riders toward the Morton Community Bikeway from the Fondulac Park District building. Kinsey Park has over 13 miles of singletrack for mountain biking and hiking. Peoria Area Mountain Biker's Association is the MTB hub. The Rock Island Trail loop covers 9 miles and climbs about 10500 feet. Grandview Drive, Glen Oak Park, and Springdale Cemetery bring the punchy hill work.
Season: Spring and summer are the best months, and the whole city feels easier when the parks are dry and green. Summer averages 26°C, so locals move intervals early, keep Z2 honest, and save longer rides for cooler windows. The Illinois River, Rock Island Greenway, and East Peoria trail carry a lot of the steady work. Winter averages 3°C, and common snowfall averages 100 cm. Runners shift toward plowed streets, short loops, and tougher footing. Cyclists lean harder on sheltered paths, MTB days when trails allow it, and patient base miles between storms.
