Granite Mountain Grind is a 50k trail race from Dirty Goat Adventures, the company that created the Thumbs Up running vest accessory. The organizer's philosophy centers on outdoor activity, embracing dirt, and prioritizing time spent outdoors. The course is described as a 50k distance, indicating an ultra-distance trail event rather than a road race. It is listed on UltraSignup, providing standard race tools for registration, results, event updates, and notifications regarding registration openings, price adjustments, and sellouts.
Sierra Prieta is a 50k trail race in Prescott, Arizona, named for the mountain range west of town. The range is in central-northwest Arizona, beside the Bradshaw Mountains and near the edge of the Arizona transition zone. Prescott also hosts related Saddles 100 events, including 50- and 100-mile trail walks, and the nearby Margonaut is a trail marathon in Granite Dells. The landscape around the race features hard, recognizable landmarks: Thumb Butte rises on Prescott's west side, Granite Mountain is the range high point, and Mount Francis marks the southern end near the Bradshaws. Granite Mountain overlooks Williamson Valley, while Little Granite Mountain, Tonto Mountain, West Spruce Mountain, and Williams Peak fill out the rough middle of the range. The name carries old Arizona cowboy flavor: Sierra Prieta was pronounced "The Sierry Petes" in cowboy camps and appeared in Gail Gardner's poem "Tyin' A Knot In The Devil's Tail."
Running: Locals build base miles on the Prescott Circle Trail, a 56-mile loop that keeps the legs honest. The trail rolls from 5,100 feet to 6,700 feet and passes tall pine forests, exposed chaparral slopes, grasslands, Watson Lake, Willow Lakes, Granite Mountain, and Thumb Butte. Goldwater Lakes gives runners a clean start when they want dirt fast. Acker Park, Turley Trail, Watson Lake, and Little Granite Mountain handle weekday Z2, hill repeats, and rocky focus. The Prescott Circle Trail runs 18 km and gains 805 m. The 48th Annual Whiskey Row Marathon, Man Against Horse, Sierra Prieta, and Granite Mountain Grind anchor the calendar.
Cycling: Bike Prescott carries the group-ride scene, and High Gear and Soul Ride keep riders pointed toward road, gravel, and MTB options. Locals use the Prescott Circle Trail, Granite Dells, Willow Lake, Watson Lake, Granite Mountain, and Thumb Butte when singletrack is the call. The Iron King Trail is 8 mi and takes riders up into the Bradshaw Mountains. The Iron King Trail is 6 mi and serves as the dirt answer to the paved Skull Valley Loop. The Iron King Trail runs 8 mi with pavement, gravel, and singletrack. Chino Grinder and Whiskey Off Road give the area its anchor-event bite.
Season: Late March to November is the sweet stretch, and locals treat it like a long training block. The town sits at 16 m, so easy runs and Z2 rides still feel like work until the lungs catch up. Summer can sit between 75 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit for four months straight. Monsoon season makes the air sticky, but mornings still work for intervals, long rides, and steady trail time. Winter changes the surface more than the mindset. The first section on some trails can turn muddy, icy, snowy, or all three, so runners and cyclists choose lines with more care.
