California International Marathon

The California International Marathon starts at Folsom Dam and finishes at the State Capitol in Sacramento. The course descends from an elevation of 366 feet to 26 feet. This December road marathon in Northern California covers the standard 26.2-mile distance. Organized by the Sacramento Running Association, CIM typically sees just under 10,000 finishers, ranking it among the largest marathons in the United States. The route traces an old gold miners' road, beginning near Folsom Dam, crossing Sacramento suburbs, and concluding downtown at the Capitol. Its net downhill profile attracts runners aiming for fast times, though the strict six-hour cutoff demands respect. CIM has been held annually since 1983. It has hosted the USA Marathon Championship on several occasions, including early national championship races for both men and women, as well as later championship events. The marathon also features a tradition of official artists, beginning with Sacramento artist Phil Dynan, whose early pieces depicted runners against a backdrop of the Sierra foothills.

IRONMAN California

IRONMAN California takes athletes downriver through Sacramento, followed by a 112-mile bike ride and a marathon to the State Capitol. This is a full-distance Ironman triathlon: a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike leg, and a 26.2-mile run, totaling 140.6 miles completed in one day. The event typically occurs in October and is included in the IRONMAN North America Series. As is common with Ironman races, it begins early and enforces strict time limits, with a 2-hour-20-minute maximum for the swim and an overall finish time of approximately 16 to 17 hours. The swim commences in the American River near Township 9 Park, merging with the Sacramento River before concluding near Tower Bridge. The bike course is flat, featuring two circuits through the Sacramento River Delta, agricultural areas, and wine regions. The run is also flat, with two loops along river paths, passing through Old Sacramento, Discovery Park, Front Street, and Capitol Mall, culminating at the California State Capitol. This course attracts triathletes aiming for a quick full-distance finish, individuals competing in their first Ironman, and spectators who can observe runners multiple times in the downtown area. The broader history of Ironman also has a California connection: John and Judy Collins competed in early triathlons near Mission Bay and Coronado before the initial Ironman concept emerged from a discussion about which sport—swimming, running, or cycling—best indicated an athlete's overall fitness.

About cycling & running in Sacramento

Sacramento Base Miles, Folsom Climbs

Running: Locals run the American River Parkway when they want easy base miles without thinking too hard. The trail is 7 km and gives you marked miles, fountains, and bathrooms along the way. There's an 84 mile dirt loop around the golf course. Buffalo Chips Running Club carries the old-school scene, while 9Run6, Claimstake Run Crew, Fleet Feet Run Crew, and Golden Valley Harriers keep the week social. California International Marathon is the anchor event here.

Cycling: Locals ride the American River Bike Trail like it is the main line through town. The trail connects into Folsom's 45+ miles of paved trails, so Z2 days can roll through greenbelts, open space corridors, native oaks, creeks, streams, lakes, and rivers. The Folsom Lake Loop is 8 km with 526 m of gain. Cycle Folsom owns a lot of the group-ride energy, while Sacramento Bike Hikers, Sacramento Wheelmen Bicycling Club, Team City Sacramento, and Women Cycle Sacramento fill the calendar. Folsom Lake Loop is where the climbs show up.

Season: May brings ideal weather, but locals train here all year. Summer running and riding happen early, and the serious bike crowd treats 6 AM as normal for about 5-6 weeks. The mornings stay cool enough that intervals, long runs, and gran fondo prep still fit before work. Winter mornings feel cool but very rideable, and 7 AM or later usually works better than a dark 5 AM roll-out. Lake Natoma keeps gravel bikes busy, Folsom Lake keeps road legs honest, and the American River Bike Trail stays useful every day of the year. Locals just shift the start time and keep the streak alive.
