Capitol Ford Santa Fe International Half Marathon

The Capitol Ford Santa Fe International Half Marathon is a fall race weekend in Santa Fe, New Mexico, centered on a 13.1-mile point-to-point half marathon. The main race begins at La Tienda Plaza Eldorado, proceeds along Old Las Vegas Highway, and concludes at the Railyard. Participants have 3 hours and 30 minutes to finish the half marathon; teams can divide the distance via the 3-Amigos Relay. The weekend also features a 4K from the Railyard Community Garden to the park and a free 1K Kids Run for children aged 3 to 14. The event is in its fifth year and caters to a wide range of participants: local and visiting runners, families, community health groups, and both first-time half marathoners and those aiming for a personal best. The point-to-point course offers views of Santa Fe historic landmarks before finishing at the Railyard. The race also supports the Kitany Water Project, which provides clean, sustainable water access for underserved communities. Children can sign up for the Kids Run at the expo or on race day. The weekend includes a free indigo T-shirt workshop led by artist Gasali Adeyemo, teaching African indigo dyeing techniques.

Santa Fe Century

The Santa Fe Century is a May cycling weekend based in downtown Santa Fe, offering both road and gravel rides. It is designed for a wide range of participants, not exclusively racers. Sunday features 106-mile and 54-mile routes available as untimed tours or timed fondo rides, alongside a shorter 20-mile option. Saturday is dedicated to gravel, with 55-mile Gravelón and 25-mile Gravelito rides on Rowe Mesa. The road routes begin and end downtown, departing with a police escort into northern New Mexico's landscape, passing through areas like the Ortiz Mountains and the Galisteo Basin. Food stops are managed by seasoned volunteers, and the event relies heavily on volunteer support. All participants receive a finisher medal, with age-group awards presented to top finishers in the Medio Fondo, Gran Fondo, and Gravelón categories. The weekend also recognizes first responders and veterans through a registration discount, and its core objective is to foster interest in cycling and ensure participants enjoy themselves.

About cycling & running in Santa Fe

Santa Fe Base Miles

Running: Locals run from the Santa Fe Railyard, the River Trail, and the Santa Fe Rail Trail when they want steady base miles. The Rail Trail runs 32 km with 77 m of gain. Santa Fe is dissected by arroyos and singletrack trails, so Arroyo de los Piniones, Arroyo de los Chamisos, Dale Ball, Atalaya Peak, and Sun Mountain all come into play fast. Santa Fe Striders host weekly group runs, and Running Hub Brew Crew meets Wednesday evenings. Capitol Ford Santa Fe International Half Marathon, Santa Fe Half Marathon & 4K, and Santa Fe Striders Running Festival anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride a mix of road that turns into gravel, then singletrack dirt. Dale Ball Trails, La Tierra Trails, Galisteo Basin Preserve, and Atalaya Peak handle the quick MTB laps, and there is fantastic singletrack 15 minutes from downtown. Atalaya Peak is 8 km with 452 m of elevation, while Pacheco Canyon Gravel Ride gives 35 miles with 4000 feet of gain. The climbs sit north in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, east toward the Ortiz Mountains, and west on the Caja Del Rio Plateau. Pedal Queens, Santa Fe Fat Tire Society, Santa Fe Roadriders, and SOBs keep the group rides moving. Santa Fe Century and GloriDays are the anchor events.

Season: Santa Fe sits at 6,998 feet, so locals respect the first week and keep plenty of Z2 honest. June through October works best for high-country riding, and September and October are prime for gravel, mountain biking, and long runs when the desert feels milder. July brings an average high of 83°F, and monsoons from July through September can flip an afternoon plan fast. Locals run early between 5:30 and 7:30 a.m. when summer heat is still manageable. Winter keeps the foothills and mesas useful, while December brings an average low of 19°F and the high country can hold snow until mid-late June.
