Locals run from the Santa Fe Railyard, the River Trail, and the Santa Fe Rail Trail when they want steady base miles. The Rail Trail runs 32 km with 77 m of gain. Santa Fe is dissected by arroyos and singletrack trails, so Arroyo de los Piniones, Arroyo de los Chamisos, Dale Ball, Atalaya Peak, and Sun Mountain all come into play fast. Locals ride a mix of road that turns into gravel, then singletrack dirt. Dale Ball Trails, La Tierra Trails, Galisteo Basin Preserve, and Atalaya Peak handle the quick MTB laps, and there is fantastic singletrack 15 minutes from downtown. Atalaya Peak is 8 km with 452 m of elevation, while Pacheco Canyon Gravel Ride gives 35 miles with 4000 feet of gain. The climbs sit north in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, east toward the Ortiz Mountains, and west on the Caja Del Rio Plateau. Pedal Queens, Santa Fe Fat Tire Society, Santa Fe Roadriders, and SOBs keep the group rides moving. Santa Fe Century and GloriDays are the anchor events.

Santa Fe sits at 6,998 feet, so locals respect the first week and keep plenty of Z2 honest. June through October works best for high-country riding, and September and October are prime for gravel, mountain biking, and long runs when the desert feels milder. July brings an average high of 83°F, and monsoons from July through September can flip an afternoon plan fast. Locals run early between 5:30 and 7:30 a.m. when summer heat is still manageable. Winter keeps the foothills and mesas useful, while December brings an average low of 19°F and the high country can hold snow until mid-late June.
