St. George Marathon
SAT OCT 3
The St. George Marathon begins in the Pine Valley Mountains, descending nearly 2,600 feet to St. George, Utah. Participants transition from a cool mountain morning to a warmer finish within the city. The race occurs on the first Saturday of October, organized by the city of St. George. It features a full marathon, half marathon, and 5K. The marathon is limited to 5,500 participants and is certified by USA Track and Field, also qualifying for the Boston Marathon. The course starts at 5,240 feet, crossing the sandstone and basalt terrain near Snow Canyon State Park before concluding at Vernon Worthen Park, situated at 2,680 feet. Its downhill nature appeals to runners aiming for quick times, yet the course requires strategic pacing and has a cutoff point at Snow Canyon Parkway and Utah State Route 18. The inaugural race was organized in a short period by Sherm Miller, a St. George parks and recreation employee, with assistance from Bob Horlacher. The first event had 57 runners and one wheelchair competitor, with 38 starters completing the race.
St. George Marathon
WED OCT 7
The St. George Marathon begins in the Pine Valley Mountains and descends toward the red rock country near St. George, Utah. This October road marathon features a fast, downhill course and qualifies runners for the Boston Marathon. The race is part of a larger event weekend that includes a half marathon, 5K, fun run, Mayor's Walk, virtual races, and charity entries. Runners are drawn to the point-to-point course as much as the finish line. The route transitions from cooler mountain terrain into the desert canyons above town. The official expo takes place at the Dixie Convention Center the day before the race, offering packet pickup and a help desk for registration issues. Greater Zion presents the event, which relies significantly on local organization and community support, distinguishing it from a basic marathon.
Cedar City Uphill Ultra
SAT OCT 10
Cedar City Uphill Ultra is an uphill trail ultra in southern Utah, run in October on the “C” trail above Cedar City. The format is simple and tough: runners repeat the same dirt-and-singletrack loop three times, staying entirely off pavement while working between about 6,000 and 8,200 feet of elevation. The race starts in sagebrush around 6,000 feet and climbs toward higher ground where fir and aspen appear. Across the full course, runners gain about 7,500 feet, so the repeated laps are less about variety and more about handling the same climb again and again. This is the race’s inaugural edition, and the entry package includes a hand-stamped T-shirt and a sticker.
Sun Marathon - 26.2 - 13.1 - 10K - 5K
SAT JAN 23
The Sun Marathon is a winter road race in Southern Utah, based in the St. George and Santa Clara area. It offers runners four in-person distances: marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K, with a virtual option available. The race centers on a straightforward concept: exchanging cold-weather training miles for a desert run among red rock mountains. The courses are largely downhill, but they feature rollers and some climbs rather than continuous drops. Marathoners pass Gunlock Reservoir, and both the full and half marathon routes follow a river for a portion. The full marathon begins in Santa Clara and includes an early start option for participants anticipating a finish time exceeding seven hours.

St. George runners get base miles from the paved urban trails, the Virgin River, Santa Clara River, Pioneer Park, Tonaquint Nature Center, and the roads out toward Ivins and Santa Clara. Locals use Webb Hill to Dixie Drive for short efforts and Kayenta Loop when they want desert rhythm without drama. The St. George Marathon is the anchor event, and Vernon Worthen Park gets the finish-line buzz. George Running Club runs Track Workouts, Tempo Runs, and Long Runs from January to September. The Kayenta Loop is 00 km with 188 m of gain. The Kayenta Loop is 43 km with 215 m of gain. The St. George Marathon is the anchor event, and Vernon Worthen Park gets the finish-line buzz. St. George riders split time between road, gravel, and singletrack because the climbing and dirt start right away. Locals use Kayenta for beginner road miles, Snow Canyon for the Ironman-course feel, City Loop for parkways, and Veyo Loop when the legs need a classic advanced route. Wasatch CX Team Camp brings the cyclocross crowd into the same terrain. The climbs here hit 780 m over 3 km. Turkey Farm, Apex Mine, Diamond Valley, Cove Wash, Zen, and Bearclaw Poppy keep gravel and MTB honest. Hoodoo 500 and Tour of Southern Utah are the big anchors.

Spring and fall are the cleanest training windows, with March through May and September through November giving runners and riders the best shot at steady Z2, intervals, and long weekends. St. George sits below 900 meters, so summer gets real early. Average highs run over 32°C from late April to early October, and July sits around 37°C. Locals move long runs, gravel rides, and Snow Canyon repeats to early morning, and Turkey Farm gravel is a past-10 AM bad idea in summer. Winter stays mild, but December lows average around 1°C and nighttime freezes change starts, layers, and shady corners.
