The Auburn Mile

The Auburn Mile is a one-mile community run through downtown Auburn, serving as the opening event for Auburn's Independence Day parade morning. Auburn Running Company presents the race, with runners using completely closed streets before finishing at the Downtown Square. It is designed for those aiming for a fast mile and those who wish to jog or walk the parade route with spectators lining the sidewalks. The course follows the entire parade route, meaning spectators are already in place when the race passes. Costumes, flags, and festive attire are encouraged, contributing to a town celebration atmosphere rather than a standard road race. The main mile is open to participants aged six and older, while the Auburn Mini-Mile offers younger children a shorter fun run connected to a KidsFirst charity partnership. An age-graded team challenge is also featured, where teams of three to five runners combine their three fastest adjusted times, allowing older and more experienced runners to compete evenly.

Rotary Gold Country Challenge

The Rotary Gold Country Challenge is a century bicycle ride held annually in the historic gold mining region of western Nevada County, California. Organized by the Rotary Club of Grass Valley, it serves as a community service event. The ride utilizes quiet roads, features marked routes, and provides ample support to ensure cyclists can navigate turns and intersections without uncertainty. The route includes experienced SAG support and staffed intersections. Well-stocked rest stops are managed by local nonprofits. Participants receive lunch at the midpoint and a post-ride BBQ with a beer and wine garden upon completion. The local setting is significant; after the ride, participants may explore nearby historic gold mining towns, making the day as much about Gold Country as it is about the cycling.

About cycling & running in Yuba City

Yuba City Base Miles

Running: Yuba City runners keep things simple, with base miles on mapped loops like morning run route, 5k practice, and Greatfield Classic loop. The Greatfield Classic loop covers 28 km and gains 232 m. The morning run route covers 81 km and gains only 6 m, so locals use it for steady Z2. The brief lists no named run club, so the scene feels informal. Sutter Buttes Spirit Mountain Run 5K, 10K & Half Marathon is the anchor event, with Running of the Elves 5k and Yuba-Sutter Turkey Trot 5k/10k Walk/Run keeping the calendar moving.

Cycling: Yuba City riding stays local and practical, with 90 cycle routes and 4,693 km of tracked distance around town. The typical route runs 8 km and climbs 90 m. The average ride covers 8 km and gains 31 m. Yuba-Sutter Cycling is the club name here, with rides for all levels and abilities. The Sutter Buttes hold the climbs, and Rotary Gold Country Challenge and Tour de Lincoln 2026 give riders the anchor-event pull.

Season: July and August are the big months, and most people get on their bikes in Yuba City then. Summer brings hot, dry days, rare rain from June to September, and the Delta Breeze cools the Sacramento Valley nights with some humidity. Locals run early, ride early, and save intervals for the hours before the heat settles in. Winter changes the rhythm with cool, wet weather, frequent rain, and tule fog. Runners keep the 5K loops useful, and cyclists lean on familiar local routes when visibility and wet pavement shape the ride. Cold waves can bring light snow and ice, but snow stays rare in the valley.
