About this race
The Cactus Rose Endurance Trail Race takes runners onto rocky, technical trails at Hill Country State Natural Area near Bandera, Texas, approximately 45 miles northwest of San Antonio. This October event offers 5, 25, 50, and 100 mile options, alongside 5 and 25 mile ruck races and a 1-mile youth trail run for children 12 and under.
The park defines the race's challenge: approximately 40 miles of multi-use trails traverse grassy valleys, cross spring-fed streams, and ascend steep limestone hills. The race is straightforwardly described as rough and tough, with a course designed to test runners on rugged terrain rather than provide a quick, easy run. The area also holds ranching history, with much of the land donated from the Merrick Bar-O-Ranch with the stipulation that it remain largely undeveloped while serving a public purpose.
