Giant pink lightning bolts and “sexy runners calves” mark the start and finish at Pink Lightning, the running camp tucked into Black Rock City. This is less polished race machine, more “Pink Lightning isn’t just a camp it’s a lifestyle!” energy: runners, volunteers, beginners, kids under 16, and people who simply love runners all drifting into the same dusty little orbit. The course is roughly four laps, rolling down the popular streets before kicking out into the desolate deep playa, where the “dusty adventure” can include mind-blowing art, dance parties, aid stations, and whatever else the playa decides to cough up. Tutu Tuesday matters here, and so does the fact that “Ran ultramarathon while naked” is a real option, though sunglasses, goggles, and a bandanna sound wiser than most clothing choices.
