The Savannah Sultry Swamp Run guides participants along 100% unpaved trail at the Savannah Ogeechee Canal in coastal Georgia, offering 5K, 10K, and 20K distances. Held in late July, the heat is a deliberate challenge: expect high humidity, intense sun, mud, wet conditions, insects, and persistent swamp air. The 20K begins at dawn, with the 10K and 5K starting later. Participant numbers are limited to 55.
The course crosses canal land featuring tidal locks, lift locks, former rice fields, old timber paths, tidal river swamp, and sandhill habitats. The canal historically facilitated commercial transport between the Savannah and Ogeechee Rivers, ceasing operations around a century ago. Local efforts have since focused on restoring the waterway and highlighting its natural environment. This event is part of the Rough Runners Race Series, awarding up to 18 series points, and seems suited for trail runners prioritizing a challenging, memorable experience over competitive winnings.
