Stone Mountain Massacre is a small winter trail race held at Stone Mountain State Park, near Roaring Gap, North Carolina. The event provides 8-mile, 25K, and 50K distances. The 50K is structured as a challenging point-to-point loop covering approximately 30 miles. This ultra-style race has a 50-runner cap, offers no prize money, begins at an elevation of 2,914 feet, and includes roughly 1,530 feet of ascent per loop.
The course follows trails within Stone Mountain State Park, connecting to the MST trails and returning. Approximately 95% of the race takes place on unpaved paths. Participants will find four aid stations, two of which are self-serve. The precise course details are revealed during race week. A unique, game-like tradition involves each runner carrying a "Protection Stone." Runners collect tokens at aid stations and must complete the race with all six stones. The complete set, along with the finisher medal, is then placed in a handcrafted wooden "Blood Book."
