The Great Ski Race is a nordic ski event in North Lake Tahoe, held at Tahoe Cross Country Center in Tahoe City, California. It takes place during the winter and serves as the primary fundraiser for Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue, an all-volunteer group that aids in rescues within the Sierra backcountry. Participants can compete seriously or enjoy the day as a long tour, choosing between a 26 km main course and a 10 km option, both starting and ending at Tahoe XC.
The 26 km course ascends from the Tahoe Basin, crosses Starratt Pass, and follows the 74 road, known as the Fiberboard Freeway. It circles through 4 Corners before heading back toward Carnelian Bay and the Blue Trail at Tahoe XC. This route includes 1,636 feet of elevation gain, presenting a significant climbing challenge, though the event maintains a festive atmosphere with a soup station offering complimentary snacks and beverages. The 10 km route remains at a lower elevation on the rolling trails of the nordic center. An untimed Tour Wave is available for those wishing to ski the full 26 km distance without official results. Both distances conclude with food and live music at the finish line.
