TOUGH ELK is a limited-entry, backcountry hunt-inspired workout in Missoula, Montana, held at Caras Park during RMEF Big Game Days. It is run in partnership with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, caps the field at 300 people, and asks participants to bring their favorite hunting backpack. The format is built around the kind of effort hunters face in elk country rather than a standard road race, with a target finish time of about an hour.
Participants go off in waves of 30, and every wave has prizes attached, so each group has a 1-in-30 shot at gear or swag from brands such as Kenetrek, Eberlestock, onX, Buck Knives, YETI, Bass Pro Shops, Cabela's, Midway USA, and Sportsman's Warehouse. Finishers also earn a chance to win a guided elk hunt in Montana's Bitterroot Mountains with Montana OutWest, including guides, lodging, meals, and game care. Every registrant gets three months of MTNTOUGH+ Training, an RMEF Digital Membership, and a swag bag.
