IRONMAN Portugal-Cascais starts and finishes at Cascais Bay, with athletes racing beside the Atlantic before heading inland and toward Lisbon. The series offers both the full IRONMAN distance, with a 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike ride, and 42.2 km marathon, and the IRONMAN 70.3 distance, with a 1.9 km swim, 90 km bike ride, and 21.1 km run. Cascais municipality hosts the event, and the setting gives the race a clear identity: sea start, mountain roads, historic landmarks, and a return to the bay.
The bike course is the big separator, especially on the full-distance race, where the 180 km road ride is split into two 90 km loops and carries about 1,400 metres of climbing. Riders go through the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, the mountainous interior, Malveira, Serra de Sintra, Lagoa Azul, and the historic Formula 1 Circuit of Estoril. The route also points toward Lisbon, passing sights such as Belém Tower, the Discoveries Monument, and the 25th of April Bridge before returning. The full run is three road loops of just over 14 km, while the 70.3 run is two loops of 10.55 km, so spectators can see athletes several times near Cascais Bay.
