At the MTB Hub at Te Putake O Tawa, winter racing happens with dirt under your shoes and a bike waiting in transition. The RATs Winter Duathlon Series is built around "fun, fitness, and friendly competition." It feels like the sort of local multisport morning where families are part of the scene, not an afterthought. Kids can line up from 4 years old, giving the day a low-key, encouraging edge.
The format is satisfyingly muddy: an "off-road run, followed by a MTB ride," then another off-road run to finish. Expect trails and hub energy rather than road-race polish, with the run-bike-run rhythm keeping everyone honest. The younger racers get their own space in the programme, while older kids and adults can still have a proper hit-out on the dirt.
