Great South Bay Run
The Great South Bay Run starts and finishes at Bay Shore Marina Park in Bay Shore, New York, with the Great South Bay and Fire Island visible from the finish. This annual road-running series, sponsored by Northwell Health, offers three USATF-certified courses: a half marathon, a 10K, and a 5K Family Fun Run.
The routes guide runners through Bay Shore’s historic downtown before proceeding along residential streets near Brightwaters Lakes, Cascades, and Canals. The field typically numbers between 500 and 1,000 participants, giving it the feel of a local Long Island race day rather than a large city marathon. The program accommodates half-marathoners, 10K runners, families, and newer runners.
Running for Water for Africa 5K
The Running for Water for Africa 5K begins and ends at Walnut Beach Pavilion, featuring a 3.1-mile run/walk. This is the race's 13th year, welcoming both runners and walkers, not solely those aiming for a quick finish.
The event also offers a 1 Mile Walk and a Kids Run, providing shorter distances for families and less experienced participants. The 5K course is a flat road, suitable for beginners, walkers, and regular runners seeking a simple local race.
Hope Children's Fund 22nd Annual Larry Hohler Bi-Continental 5k Fun Run/Walk
The Larry Hohler Bi-Continental 5k Fun Run/Walk is a 5k event held at Saint Anselm’s Episcopal Church in Shoreham, New York. Participants can run or walk the course. A family-pack option and a virtual 5k are available for those unable to attend in person. The race was established to honor Larry Hohler and generates funds for Hope Children’s Fund.
The “Bi-Continental” designation reflects the race’s connection between Long Island and Meru, Kenya, where Hope Children’s Fund assists orphaned children. Hope Children’s Fund is a 501(c)(3) organization registered in New York State, founded in 2005. It provides necessities such as food, clothing, shelter, medical attention, and educational opportunities. The organization states it has no paid employees or offices in the United States, ensuring donations directly benefit the children. A local Kenyan team of twelve manages the orphanage in Meru, which currently houses 92 children.
Suffolk County Marathon
The Suffolk County Marathon is an annual Long Island race weekend featuring a full marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K, 1K Kids Fun Run, and a Virtual Mile Mission. The main Sunday races begin in the Village of Babylon and conclude at Gardiner County Park in Bay Shore. Saturday races start and finish within Gardiner County Park. The 5K remains entirely within the park. Combo entries are available, including marathon-and-5K, half-and-5K, and 10K-and-5K, for participants seeking multiple events.
The half marathon and marathon routes cross the Robert Moses Causeway, incorporating a distinct Long Island landmark rather than a simple road loop. The event accommodates a broad spectrum of runners and walkers; the 5K is open to ages 14 to 99, and a children's race is provided for younger participants. The Virtual Mile Mission allows participants to complete miles through various activities like walking, jogging, biking, swimming, or using a treadmill. This race series supports local veterans programs, with proceeds benefiting veterans on Long Island. The marathon has contributed over $1 million to local veterans' services.
2026 Colony Grill 'Hot Oil' 5K
The Colony Grill "Hot Oil" 5K is an annual 5K race in downtown Fairfield, starting at 1520 Post Road. This family-friendly road race is connected to Veterans Day, with proceeds benefiting those who serve and protect.
Fairfield University is a key sponsor. Its student-athletes, cheer team, dance team, and other students participate in the race-day crowd or assist with the event. The Starbucks at the Fairfield University Store opens early. Spectators can cheer near the finish line, and runners receive the first opportunity at complimentary Colony Grill pizza and beer after the race.
Islip Fire Department Turkey Trot 5K
The Islip Fire Department Turkey Trot 5K is a Thanksgiving-season community run in Islip, New York. Check-in begins at 8 AM, with the race starting at 9 AM. This 5K takes place regardless of weather, and all proceeds benefit the Islip Fire Department. Registered runners receive a T-shirt, live results via text and email, complimentary finish-line photos, and personalized bibs for early registrants.
The course begins at Richardson Lane and South Bay Avenue. Runners head south on South Bay Avenue to the beach, then return north before turning onto Maple Avenue and Monell Avenue. The finish line is located at the firehouse. The event welcomes families, local runners, and walkers alongside competitive 5K participants. Awards are presented across age groups from 14-and-under to 90-plus. Medals are given to the top three men and women in each age group, as well as to the first 350 finishers.
Rob's Trail Run Edition
Rob's Trail Run Edition is a 5K trail race at Stillwell Woods Preserve in Woodbury, New York. It is a short off-road race rather than a road 5K, with adult, youth, and high school entries, plus a team challenge option. Entry pricing starts at $40.
The route runs through the preserve's trail system, so runners should expect a woods setting instead of closed city streets. The race benefits The Center for Developmental Disabilities and honors Rob Lauterborn, a talented runner from the Plainview-Old Bethpage Road Runner's Club. The team challenge also offers a virtual option, which lets groups take part without all being on the same start line.
Ospreys Dominion Wine Run 5k
The Ospreys Dominion Wine Run 5k is a run/walk held at Osprey’s Dominion Vineyards in Peconic, New York, where a glass of wine awaits participants at the finish line. The primary distance is 5K, with a 0K option available for those who wish to enjoy the wine-run atmosphere without the running component. The event takes place at Osprey’s Dominion Vineyards on Main Road, and is part of the Wine Run format held at winery locations.
The course winds through the vineyard, differing from city streets or typical road-race circuits, making the setting as appealing as the distance itself. Participants receive a T-shirt, custom race bib, souvenir wine glass, and finisher medal. The post-race activities feature wine tastings. This event is designed for wine enthusiasts, casual runners, walkers, and individuals viewing the 5K as a social gathering rather than a competitive speed event.
