Caveman Challenge at Waterloo Lake
The Caveman Challenge is a trail race held at Waterloo Lake Park in Denison, Texas, offering distances from 5K to 50K. Taking place in October, the event begins with the longer races. The 50K, marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K, and a 1.5-mile shore walk/run all start in quick succession on race morning. This is the event's second year, and registration provides a shirt and medal.
The course features loops with dirt, rocks, roots, and a cave, ensuring a genuine trail experience even for shorter distances. The 5K and 10K each complete one loop, while the half marathon, marathon, and 50K run the 5K loop multiple times in varying configurations. Participants will encounter two aid stations: one at the start/finish pavilion and another approximately four miles into the loop. This second station offers water, electrolyte drink, fruit, and both sweet and salty snacks.
Veterans Day Ruck March
The Veterans Day Ruck March is a free, military-themed 3-mile march in Celina, Texas, starting and finishing at Old Celina Park. It is open to everyone, with a simple setup: bring a rucksack with weight for the ruck experience, carry only what feels manageable, or simply walk the route.
Chief Cullison sets a 15:00-per-mile pace for those wanting a steady target, while other Celina Police Department officers support individuals moving at a more relaxed pace. Registration is required, even though the event is free. Finishers receive a patch for their gear, and participants can add an official ruck march shirt for an extra charge.
Celina Turkey Trot
The Celina Turkey Trot begins and ends in downtown Celina, Texas, with race headquarters at 127 N. Ohio Street. This Thanksgiving Day event offers three distances: a 10K road race, a 5K road race, and a 1-mile family fun run/walk suitable for all ages. Run Celina organizes the race, directed by Melissa Gresham, with REX Real Estate as the presenting sponsor. As Run Celina’s second annual Turkey Trot, it is establishing itself as a local Thanksgiving tradition.
The route crosses downtown Celina’s brick streets, goes under sycamores and crepe myrtles, circles Old Celina Park, and returns downtown. The event is intended for families, neighbors, club runners, and those wanting a pre-Thanksgiving dinner run. Costumes are encouraged, with a prize for the best turkey costume. The race also features music, awards, six activity stations, community support stations, and a Sippin’ Spot offering hot apple cider. The 10K and 5K races include overall, masters, and age-group awards. Proceeds benefit Lovepacs, an organization that provides meals for children in need.
Naughty Hog
Naughty Hog is a December trail and ultra race held at Ray Roberts Lake State Park’s Johnson Branch Unit in Valley View, Texas. The race offers a variety of distances: 5K, 10K, 25K, 50K, 100K, and a 25K ruck. This range attracts both short-distance trail runners and those seeking a long day of running.
The primary course is a 15-mile/25K loop within the Johnson Branch trails, featuring over 900 feet of elevation gain per loop. Participants will encounter dirt singletrack, rooty sections, grass, ATV roads, and some paved trail. The 5K is entirely on pavement, and shorter trail distances follow out-and-back configurations. All races begin and end at the Johnson Branch Nature Center. Historically, race-day temperatures typically fall between 34 and 56 degrees Fahrenheit.
