The Downtown Kitchener Mile is a one-mile race held on a summer evening in Victoria Park, Kitchener, Ontario, beginning with the first wave at 6:00 p.m. This is a certified, chip-timed 1,609-metre event within Run Waterloo’s Run Pure + Simple series. This series focuses on the race itself: no shirts, medals, swag, food, or awards are provided as standard. Run Waterloo members can enter for free, while the public entry fee is set at $16.09 plus fees and taxes, mirroring the race distance.
The course consists of one full loop and one partial loop within Victoria Park, with the distance certified by Athletics Canada. The park remains open to the public during the race, meaning runners share the space with other park and trail users. Volunteers assist with course management. Runners are grouped into waves based on their expected finish times: under seven minutes, seven to nine minutes, and over nine minutes. This arrangement accommodates fast milers, consistent runners, and newer participants within the same straightforward format. Timing is managed with reusable chips that participants return post-race, and results are published online.
