Shiga Kogen 100 is a summer trail-running series held at Ichinose Parking Lot in Shiga Kogen, Nagano Prefecture, within one of Japan's major national parks and a UNESCO Eco Park. The main event is 100 km, with 40 km and 18 km options available, making it accessible beyond ultra specialists. Shiga Kogen offers cooler summer temperatures, beneficial for a long mountain race. Organizers have updated the course, describing it as more manageable, though runner feedback indicates challenging climbs and descents remain.
The course crosses mountain paths across highland terrain. Early sections may feature wooden walkways, fine gravel, mud, and stream crossings that can wet shoes. While some stretches are runnable, the ascents and descents can feel demanding relative to the distance. The 100 km race has a unique accommodation requirement: participants from outside Nagano's Hokushin region must secure lodging in advance. A Mountain Trail Maintenance option is also offered for 100 km and 40 km runners, involving pre-race grass cutting and subsequent trail work, directly linking the event to path upkeep.
