The Tazawa Lake Marathon is a September road race held around Lake Tazawa in Semboku, Akita Prefecture. The event features full marathon and 20 km races. Its official slogan highlights what locals want runners to focus on: smiles, Japan’s deepest lake, and the blue water of Tazawa-ko.
The race is organized by the Tazawa Lake Marathon Executive Committee, with participation from Semboku City, the city education board, athletics groups, local media, and sports bodies. It is intended for local runners, club runners, and individuals seeking fitness or a personal challenge. A unique aspect is its friendship agreement with the Kaohsiung Fubon Marathon in Taiwan, which allows for the selection of two Semboku citizen runners from the full marathon or 20 km race to be dispatched.
