The Gassan Foothills Ultramarathon covers 75.9 km of mountain terrain, starting from the Gassan Shizu Onsen venue in Shizu, Nishikawa Town, Yamagata Prefecture. Participants begin at 5:00 AM and have 12 hours to complete the course, which concludes in the evening. The route includes a total elevation gain of 1,544 m, presenting a challenging day on the roads and trails surrounding the base of Mt. Gassan, distinct from a flat city ultramarathon.
The race was established to familiarize more people throughout Japan with Nishikawa, a town highlighted for its cuisine, heritage, scenery, and natural environment at the foot of Mt. Gassan. Organizers aim for participants to connect with the landscape, sample regional dishes, and interact with the local supporters. Registration is open for the 75 km event, with a reduced fee for students aged 18 to 24 who provide student identification. Paid entries are final and cannot be canceled, refunded, or transferred.
