The PSS Imperial Palace Health Running series is a modest, affordable running event circling Tokyo’s Imperial Palace, offering 5 km, 10 km, 20 km, and 20 km relay distances. Individual participation costs 1,000 yen, leading many to view it as a practical training day as much as a competition. It is designated as both a contest and a practice run, welcoming beginners and all skill levels, typically drawing a few hundred participants rather than a massive urban race turnout.
The start and finish line is located by the clock tower within Sakuradamon Gate. The longer distances involve multiple laps around the palace grounds, with firm cutoffs for those aiming for the full 20 km. PSS times the event manually using a stopwatch with a printer, provides an award to every runner, and offers practical awards like sports drinks and a meal ticket for an izakaya. The organizer describes it as “Japan’s most relaxed race”: latecomers are permitted, same-day entries and distance adjustments are accepted, and runners who finish early can still have their covered distance recorded. The event may be canceled due to weather or public health concerns, with a rescheduled date offered instead of a refund.
