Kumeu Showgrounds offers conditions where a school race can become quite challenging: open fields, water obstacles, and numerous challenges that make clean shoes unlikely. The Secondary School Tough Guy and Gal Challenge: Auckland pits students against other schools, giving it the familiar competitive spirit of school sports, with teammates encouraging each other through difficult sections.
The course is designed to be dynamic, moving from native bush trails to field running, featuring a net climb resembling a spider's web, a mud slide, and a section requiring participants to crawl under barbed wire. The "tricky wire rope bridge" and "swamp crossing with additional mud" are memorable features for young participants, particularly those who began hesitantly and ended up smiling, wet, and covered in mud.
