The Cactus Rose Endurance Trail Race is a rugged trail running series held in Bandera, Texas, within Hill Country State Natural Area, approximately 45 miles northwest of San Antonio. Taking place in October, it offers runners a range of distances: 5, 25, 50, and 100 miles, alongside 5-mile and 25-mile ruck events. A 1-mile youth trail run is also available for children 12 and under, ensuring the weekend caters to more than just ultrarunners, though the longer races are the primary challenge.
The course features rocky, technical loops on Hill Country trails, with steep limestone hills, grassy valleys, and stream crossings. The park provides around 40 miles of multi-use trail, and the race embraces this challenging terrain. The organizer's motto, “No whiners, wimps, or wusses,” reflects the event's intent: it's designed for runners and ruckers seeking heat, rocks, climbs, and a straightforward challenge. The area also holds ranching history, with much of the natural area originating from the Merrick Bar-O-Ranch before becoming a protected Hill Country site.
